Date: 3/23/12 11:35 AM I would like some opinions on where to place a particular hem. TYIA.
I have a purchased dress that needs to be hemmed. It is supposed to be a maxi dress, so of course on me (I'm 5'3"), it is several inches too long, even with shoes on. Since I have to hem it anyway, I'm considering how short ot go. Option 1: ankle length (but then you only see the point toes of my boots - IMO their worst feature). Option 2: 2-3" below the tops of the boots (so upper calf). Option 3: shorter in front by a few inches, with one measurement at either Op1 or Op2.
I bought it for a charity event ("Boots and Bonnets" held on Derby Day), and plan to wear it with these boots -

Date: 3/23/12 12:00 PM cowboy boots are not really intended to be seen 'at all times' ... when you kick up your heels, that's when the boots show. I'd hem the dress to almost skim the floor.
but since they _are_ gorgeous boots, you might try a bottom-of-the-calf length which would be about halfway between the top and the heel ... ------ Liz / Calgary |

Date: 3/24/12 4:10 PM For petites, I would say to hem just above the floor or right at the ankle. Midcalf is not as flattering, but if your objective is to show off the boot, then hem the dress higher. I know its hard to decide when actual cutting is involved, so try this: pin the hem up at different spots, photograph each option with the dress and boots on, and compare and decide at your leisure. You can often make a better decision from photos than from looking in the mirror. Good luck! ------ www.stylememary.blogspot.com |
