How do you make these? Vintage details

Date: 3/23/12 3:43 PM The quickest, most easy way to make the first photo, for just me, would just be to take some pre- made up pom pom kind of pom pom fringe trim, on the fabric flange, by the yard, and just cut some circles of fabric, gather it around the edges, draw up the gathering, and tuck the raw edge in the top over the existing pom poms, using them as the stuffing for your fabric balls. That would work fine, if the item was lined, and had a place to hide the fabric flange in. I kind of think, they did not do that though, as theirs looks like on a single layer of fabric, with maybe a hand rolled edge instead, and too far spaced apart to have done that. So instead I think they made up thier own little fabric balls, and stuffed them with something else, and then used a hand needle and some hand sewing thread, to make a "stem" for each of them, and hand tacked them on instead.

Sufiya Intermediate ON CANADA Member since 3/23/12 Posts: 10	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 3/25/12 2:56 PM These could be stuffed yo-yos i.e. little fabric circles with a draw thread around the edge., drawn up around ready-made pom-pom balls, which I see everywhere in craft and dollar stores. (the ready made ball fringe is also a good idea and may well save your sanity!) Clover makes a yo-yo template in several sizes; the smallest one looks about right for this, but a cardboard circle about 2" across would probably do just as well. It's just easier to sew the drawstring into the fabric with the template holding it steady! Plus, all you have to do is clamp the Clover template onto the fabric and cut around it quickly; no fiddling with holding cardboard steady and it slipping from side to side as you bear down on the rotary cutter or cut around it with scissors...to make numbers of these you are going to want a method that goes as quickly as possible-or you will throw up your hands after the first ten! Oh, and you will want to figure out what to do about the cord they are dangling from; this looks like 'self" cord...but that would likely only work with a fine silk, which is what this looks like it is made from. I expect you will want to install the cord on the pompom ball BEFORE wrapping it with the fabric circle.
