I bought a super-cute ruffle fabric in L.A. a couple of weeks ago. It is dip-dyed with desert colors (I live in the desert), so was immediately attracted to it.
Anyhow...cut out a SIMPLE t-shirt design (no sleeves) and purchase some fold-over stretch nylon tape (used in RTW) for the neckline finish and sleeve edges.
HOWEVER, the fabric RUNS (like a nylon stocking) and I'm having a hard time controlling the runs. It has a nearly sheer black nylon base under the ruffles. I'm using a stretch needle; will switch to a ballpoint shortly to see if that makes a difference, but suspect it won't have much of an effect.
Has anyone had this issue? I've got several ruffle tops in my wardrobe and have analyzed RTW construction techniques (knowing that in apparel factories there are specialized machines that apply neck tapes, etc.) that do the actual insertion of tapes automatically.

Date: 3/24/12 7:41 PM I've sewn with a fabric like what you're describing many times. Skirt, cap sleeve top and sleeveless top. I've never had it run. It's either the fabric or something is snagging it while you sew. If it's running before you even sew it, it's the fabric. If it's running after sewing, the needle is a good place to look. Or the throat plate may have rough spots that its catching on. Is it only running on one side? |

1 member likes this. I'm with Nhi and suggest you check your throat plate. I'd also suggest you check the bottom of your presser foot. The fabric may be catching on something there. ------

Date: 3/24/12 9:30 PM Thank you both! I think it must be the fabric; could be a cheap yarn. I have a newer Bernina, so I don't think it is the throat plate or the presser foot; I suspect it is the fabric. When I cut it, the "meshy" areas run. |

Date: 3/24/12 11:56 PM Thanks much. I was just in L.A. (as I said earlier) and bought a bunch of the ruffle fabrics, so I'm stuck with what I have at the moment; need to sew up!
I think I'm going to order a single needle throat plate for my Bernina 240 and see if that also helps; I need one anyway.
