Well my hometown finally got a new Joanns. We haven't had one for many many years.
I checked it out today, but only left with $12 worth of stuff. Amazing how my daughter thinks she OWNS me! I basically was ordered home by a 19 yr old, lol.
I really didn't need any more stuff anyway. And, we have a shop hop coming up with our ASG, so I looked but didn't contemplate the fabric. They do carry different stuff than Hancocks, so that's great.

I also signed up to teach classes. Most of the classes have instructors, but there was a teen class lacking one, and I might get more than that later on.

The instructor has to purchase and make the class item for display. You get it back when they're done with it. 60% of the class proceeds is the pay. Not too bad for something you enjoy doing. And since you are an independant contractor, you can claim mileage on the taxes.

Half of the store is sewing/quilting and the other half is crafts. It is nice, but a bit crowded. I heard others in there complaining about that. Two carts can't go down the aisles at the same time.

But, I'm happy to have other options.

There is apparently a new store in Charlotte, NC! They put a new store in Mooresville last June, but the place is tiny. I'm hoping the new one in Charlotte will be bigger.

What are you going to teach? When do you start?

I really enjoy quilting. I love to play with fabrics, colors and pictures. I recently discovered how much fun applique can be. As I love making pictures, landscape quilting can be challenging, but seeing the picture come to life is so rewarding.

I went today too, but I spent much more than you did.
I bought a pretty navy knit print, navy cotton stretch sateen ,two cuts of spiderman cotton and a spiderman fleece piece...plus ribbon, zipper's and a dress form! I even got one of the $10 free gift cards they were giving away.
I've already made two pillow cases our of the spiderman cotton and a boppy cover from the fleece for my grandson, who I am visiting next weekend.
I had a very productive day in the seeing room and hope to get the navy pieces made tomorrow, plus work on my muslin for the dress class.
When will your class be?

Not sure when the class will be - I think May or June, though it shows in the March/April class brochure. I have to turn in the sample first, and pass the background check, lol.
Did you see any flannel? I saw very little, but thankfully not loads of fleece either. I am looking for some solid flannel to finish a baby blanket. I saw only a couple of bolts of some really nasty looking solids. They looked old and like they'd already been washed a few times!
What dressform did you buy? I'm supposed to be making a paper tape dressform next weekend with a lady who's interested in joining our ASG. Ha - that should be a riot!

I did see flannel. I think it was on the same aisle as the licensed prints. I bought the My Twin form. I had a really old Dritz that wouldn't stand straight and the dials would not move anymore, I inherited it from a friend many years ago.

Edited - It is My Double...not My Twin!!

This is the new corporate design, apparently. Last fall they remodeled our (previously perfect ) store, and that's what we ended up with, too. I can't get used to it.

Still, sounds like fun! The year our store opened, I told DH that what I wanted to do on my birthday was go to the new JA and spend as much time as I wanted looking at everything. People were welcome to come with me, but they were not allowed to complain about how long we were there. (We ended up staying almost three hours! Ha!)

It is a really nice store. I've already used all the fabric I purchased on Saturday. I was VERY disappointed in the knit piece that was cut. It was so off when he cut the yard that I barely got my top cut out of it. I'll have to watch more closely when I get fabric cut there from now on. The other pieces were just fine.

Our new Joanns had the "soft opening" on the 9th of this month and had Grand opening this past weekend. I went in on Saturday afternoon, during the "meet the teacher" time. I signed up over a month ago to teach classes. I taught one this past Saturday(Sewing 101). I'm teaching two more 101 classes this week and a knitting class next week. The week of April 9th, I'm teaching the skirt, following week the tunic. I have classes scheduled through the first of May. I opted to teach only morning classes, since I tend to putter out pretty soon after dinner.

SouthernStitch, what are you teaching?

I'm going in as an independent contractor and not a Joann employee. I have to pay for all my materials to make the "prototypes". I do get them back though. It's my understanding if you go in as an employee of Joann's, they will pay for your material, but you have to give the item to the company.

Right, I'll be an independant contractor as well. I'm late to the game, as most of the sewing classes are already spoken for. I'm going to do the teen class with the bandanna purse. I can only teach in the evenings or on weekends. She said they hope to get good enrollment in the summer with the teens. I still think the teens would rather go in the evening even in the summer. I hope so, cause I'm not into giving up a vacation day to teach classes. .

The purse is listed in the March/April classes, but she said we could put it off till May/June. They need to order more supplies for it anyway.

Carol, I hope I get to go back soon. I just didn't have the time I wanted. I was only wanting to give them some ASG flyers to display but they can't - Joann's is very strict about what stuff can go on what counter, but they said they could put them in the classroom. That's how I wound up talking to the Education Coordinator.
