can anyone point me in the direction of a good online tute on how to do a fba on a dress - it has like a sweetheart neckline and straps and i just can't get my heart around how to do it (as there is no full armhole) and it has darts coming of the front waistband.

I'm really not sure what your specific question is, which may be why no one has chimed in.
To do any FBA: find the bust point. Mark your lines for reference toward the armhole, side seam, and shoulder (if needed for a large FBA). Then do the FBA as you normally would on a darted front. The fact that you don't have sleeves or full armholes doesn't matter. When you do an FBA, you are using those landmarks/seam lines as pivot points for where the pattern needs to be opened to allow for more room in the bust.
If you post a photo of the pattern or a link to the pattern so we have a better idea what is troubling you, perhaps you will be able to get more detailed help.
Debbie Cook had some nice tutorials. I don't know the links anymore. Her blog is StitchesandSeams on blogspot. I think she moved them to her blog page.
