sewing ribbing on a shirt any tutorials out there?

I'm finally jumping in and going to use it making a t-shirt for my DS. It's an ottobre pattern so the instructions are a bit light. She doesn't use a serger (iirc), but her method of determining the correct length of fabric to use (depends on how much it stretches, so don't always trust the pattern piece) is terrific.
