I've been a quilter for 6-7 years branching out into garments. (I made a fantastic short A frame dress 9 years ago under supervision of a seasoned sewer so I know I'm capable) I am also taking a sewing class locally to get the ins and outs, but am having a hard time finding patters that I like. Specifically tops, is there any special place I should look to find clothing more my age and style? I like shirts that are close fitted (belted even) under the bust, but that flow down nicely. I also like tunic style, short sleeve or 3/4 sleeve... banded waists are ok. I'm small chested, small waisted, but big hips... so shirts that lend nicely to curves and no chest are ideal. I've tried searching all the key words I can think of but am having a hard time coming up with what I want. Short of ripping up the shirts I have that I love and making patterns out of them I'm at a loss as what to do next. I cant be the only that likes this style... suggestions?

Well, I would browse through the websites of the usual suspects - Simplicity/New Look/Burda, McCalls/Butterick/Vogue - and see if anything grabs you. The look of a garment can vary a lot based on the fabric you use, so don't take the pattern envelope as gospel.

If you have a particular shirt style you really like, why not post a picture and see if someone here has a pattern suggestion for you? It's hard to know what style you're specifically looking for. There are some indie patterns aimed at younger sewers, and some good books too - the Sew U books or some of the Japanese pattern books might be your style.

Jalie has a lot of great knit patterns that are youthfully styled and have a body-skimming fit. Jalie 2793 sounds like it might be what you are looking for. As someone who is also pear shaped I found Kwik Sew 3378 very flattering.

I would also look at Burda and Simplicity patterns. They tend to be a little bit more hip and have more youth-oriented styles than some of the other designers out there. Vogue, McCall's, and Butterick are also good to have a look at but I don't think they would have as much of what you are looking for.

Check out some of the tops at StyleArc. They are cute and seem younger. http://www.stylearc.com.au/stylearc/ The downside of them is that they aren't multi-size. Measure yourself, and then check their sizing chart to get the closest match. I like that they have pics of celebrities and show how to get the look with their patterns.

You might also want to look at Burda patterns. they have a "Burda Young Fashion" section that has trendier younger looking styles. Here is a link to give you an idea: http://www.sewingworld.co.uk/Burda_Young_Fashion.html
Ignore the little kid stuff and scroll down.
