Ugh! Who wants to go to Houston in August! Oh well, I live here so I'll be in town anyway...

I've never been to a sewing conference that wasn't quilt oriented, so I'm a little overwhelmed. Any thoughts for a budding garment sewer? Any particular teachers that are just fab? Probably the topic that would be most beneficial to me is fitting, and I see Louise Cutting and Connie Crawford both have interesting looking classes.

I do recognize several of the teachers from Quilt Festival. I've had fun classes with Ginny Eckley and I loved Katrina Walker's Sewing with Silk class. But I would like to concentrate on classes either garment-oriented or with teachers who don't participate in Quilt Festival.

If you're looking for a good fitting instructor, check out Sarah Veblen. I went to conference in 2010 and she wasn't there that year. Her new fitting book, "The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting," has been reviewed extensively here on PR so check it out. I've taken a couple of classes with Sarah here on PR and really enjoyed her. If I was going to conference this year, she'd be at the top of my list.

Louise Cutting has a line of very loose fitting patterns. If that is the look you're after, you may be interested in her patterns. Even if you're not, she gives excellent fitting guidance you can use and keeps her classes very interesting as well as funny.

Connie Crawford has the pattern line with Butterick so you can't miss with her.

Good luck getting the classes you want. Be sure to register the first day to be sure get the ones you want.

Be sure to register for the classes as soon as registration becomes available. You might want to check the ASG website for more info. I believe you can also register online. Connie Crawford and Louis Cutting are both big names so if you want to take one of their classes, be sure to sign up early. They fill up fast!

ASG conferences are absolutely fantastic. Many classes are given by top notch big name instructors. The vendor hall is amazing. I have gone twice thus far and have greatly enjoyed them each time. I will not be able to go this year but I will wait until next time they are on the East Coast.

Tjsews and Judy thanks for the input. Registration opened for members already and opens to the public Friday so I want to pick classes very soon.

I may have misinterpreted, it looks like all on-line registration starts Friday. Rats, the e-mail is on my home e-mail which I cannot access here...

And one thing really funny? I don't see anywhere in the brochure saying which convention center in Houston the conference is happening. I assume it's the George R Brown, since the Hilton is the "official hotel", but it doesn't actually say that.

Registration doesn't open until Friday. Just the brochure is up now. I'm interested in Ginny Ekley's silk screen & dyeing classes. They sound really fun & informative. I'm not familiar w/ her, though.

I registered that Friday morning, so I did get everything I wanted. However, being a president of a chapter, I was really bummed that some of the best all day classes are on Thursday. I have to attend leadership stuff that day.

Here is my schedule:
Designer Handbag Details/Kuczek
Fitting Sleeves and Armholes/Crawford
The Suzanne Wrap/Seabrooke
Hand Stitching Primer/Kazell
Pants Fitting/Peggy Sagers
Princess Seams are your friend/Crawford
Sew Like a Pro/Crawford
The Sheath Dress/Sagers
Working with Slippery/Drapey Fabrics/ Veblen

I am so looking forward to this. I have not been to any sewing related function outside of ASG meetings since the very first PR weekend in NYC!!
Look forward to meeting some of you. I'll be wearing my PR pin!

At first I had nothing but fitting classes and I thought how boring is this! Peggy Sager's pants class, the princess seam and armhole classes with Crawford all address fitting, so that's good enough.
There are TWO pants fitting classes by two separate instructors which is good. I was torn between the armseye classes from both Crawford and Veblen, but I went with Crawford in the end.

Hand stitching is something I really need to learn better about. I love sewing handbags, so that class was a given.

I would have taken Susan Kalje's classes but I'm already enrolled in the Couture Dress on Craftsy.
