Hi there,

I am sewing this pattern up at the moment, hopefully you can see it, if not it is a vintage pattern Simplicity 9983
http://vintagepatterns.wikia.com/wiki/Simplicity_9983

It is unlined but I am making it in a thin vilene and would like to line it. Normally that wouldn't be a problem but the sleeves and side seams are sewn all in one and I am not sure how to add a lining to this. I don't want to line the sleeves, just the front and back. On a normal pattern I would just join the lining at the sleeve head but can't do that with this as the lining side seams would be too hard to sew and I imagine they would pucker at the join.

Any ideas?

Two ideas ... Make your lining from the pattern of the dress by sewing the side seams and finishing the armhole by serging or however you think is best to make it as lump free as possible. Stitch lining and dress together at neck edge and flip lining to the inside. Loosely tack armhole of lining to dress on the shoulder seam and side seam to hold it in place. Hem dress and lining independent of each other. Another choice is to sew body of dress at side seam, repeat with lining. Sew lining and dress together at the neck edge and flip to the inside. Sew sleeves together. Set sleeves into the lined dress body.

You could also underline the dress. Baste the dress pieces and underlining pieces together within the seam allowaces and treat as one.

Thanks for replying, I hadn't thought of underlining it. Might give that a try :)
