Date: 4/6/12 11:05 AM I have gotten in a sewing mood. Anyone know of a good source to purchase muslin cheap? Needs to be a decent quality so the grain lines run true. Appreciate any suggestions. I have lots of Muslims to make. ------ "Let's make the most of this day"

Date: 4/6/12 1:18 PM I like when Joann's has a coupon and get RocLon bleached - I see they have a website, but do not know if they sell to customers or businesses only?
Hope more folks jump in later, good luck and happy sewing
I meant RocLon has a website, everyone knows Joann's does -- Edited on 4/6/12 1:18 PM -- ------ I have great enthusium for sewing, but lack talent to be great.

I'm not sure how the prices compare to Joann's or Hancock's. I usually use a Hancock's coupon and buy an entire uncut bolt whenever I need muslin. My last purchase was not recent, and I know cotton prices have gone up since the last time I purchased.

Date: 4/6/12 4:23 PM I also buy a bolt from JoAnn when I get a coupon. I have converted to making muslins and using that as my pattern |

Date: 4/7/12 9:11 AM I followed the link to Dharma Trading, Muslin and saw that there were several choices. What type of muslin would you recommend for garment sewing? |

Date: 4/7/12 10:47 AM So, I'm curious...I just use scrap fabric of the same content that I want to make my final in....I even use old sheets...what does it matter...it'll be a wadder anyway...or it will be instructional. Why does it have to be "muslin?" Am I missing something important here? ------ "The problem is not that there are problems. Date: 4/7/12 1:05 PM If you are an ASG member, you get a 15% discount. They used to allow you to stack your discount on sale prices which made a really big discount. |

Date: 4/7/12 2:09 PM Threaddy, I use other fabrics too sometimes, but the nice thing about muslin is that you can mark on it, and it's easy to see all the adjustments you make as you go. Plus it's already pressed and folded if you buy it on the bolt, and it's easy and quick to sew with an average needle and thread.
I've done the same thing as others - I buy a bolt of muslin from J's with a x% off coupon whenever I run out. To save $ I buy the narrower width (36"?). I've found that pattern pieces are rarely wider than that. ------ I've moved! Visit my new sewing blog at http://chiralcraft.wordpress.com

Date: 4/7/12 2:28 PM Try contacting a drapery workroom in your area and ask if they will order a bolt of "seconds" for you. When I was doing draperies, my supplier regularly had a few bolts of less-than-perfect drapery lining, which he would sell for between 75 and 95 cents per yard. Of course, there would be shipping on top of that, but for about $50 you would get enough "muslin" to test a whole new wardrobe.
