Date: 4/7/12 5:24 PM I am having trouble understanding a part of this pattern. It should be simple math, but my mind is boggled. Hope someone can help.
The notions call for 1 and 1/2 yards of seam binding for the lining's gathering. However that gives me 4 and 1/2 feet.
In the pattern is says the following:
For Center back stay, cut a piece of seam binding as follows:
59-1/2"
Pin stay to center back seam, centering over the 5/8" seam allowance and having upper and lower edges even. Adjust gathers. Stitch along center of stay, keeping cape free.
For overarm and side stay cut two pieces of seam binding, each as follows:
57"
Pin stay to overarm and side seams, centering over lower gather line and having lower edges even and upper edges even with notch. Adjust gathers. Stitch along center of stay, keeping cape free.
For front and back stays, cut four pieces of seam binding, each as follows:
59"
Pin stays to wrong side of front and back, centering over solid line and having upper and lower edges even. Adjust gathers. Stitch along center of stays.
So my question is, do I really only need 1 and 1/2 yards of seam binding?

Date: 4/23/12 8:13 AM I hate to bump up this thread, but I am still looking for an answer to this problem. I do not know anyone who sews and the women at the fabric store couldn't help me.
Thank so much again! |

Date: 4/23/12 11:13 AM Not sure which view you're making, but yes, you probably need more. I would use the measurements you're provided, add them up, and buy that much or a bit more... ------ Viking Lily 545

Date: 4/23/12 12:16 PM I might be off kilter a bit, but I come up with more than a yard and a half. The 4 that are cut at 59" comes to 236 inches. I might have something wrong, but looks to me you are gonna need a lot more than a yard and a half: one cut at 59-1/2, another at 57 and 4 at 59? |

Date: 4/23/12 12:17 PM If you are making view A, from the line drawing it looks like there are 9 sections that you need the stay for
Center back - 1 - 59 1/2"
Front - 2 - 59" = 118"
Back - 2 - 59" = 118"
Side Seam - 2 - 57" = 114"
Over Arm - 2 - 57" = 114"
TTL 523.5" = 14.5 yards
They made a mistake on the pattern.
You might just want to measure the final length on your body before starting the gathering and adding the stays. I measure 5'6", my center front from neck to the floor is 53" (without shoes), this cape would be too long for me, so I would shorten it to my measurements before cutting the strips.
Good Luck, looking forward to seeing the review.
