I have a Janome 300E (which I love) and I have started doing a lot more embroidery which means I am really using a lot of bobbin fill.
I have been using the Janome bobbin fill which works great on my machine, but it seems to only come in tiny spools of 800m or so and I prefer to buy things like this in bulk (because nothing kills a fun weekend sewing like running out of something 5 minutes after the store closes)
I did get a cone of bobbin fill when I bought a set of threads last year but each time I have used it I got little white threads on the surface of my work.
So I would love to know what others use for bobbin fill?
Is there a trick to winding bobbins from a cone?
What about pre-wound bobbins?

Date: 4/9/12 8:10 AM I buy Bottom Line (by Superior) by the large cones and wind my own bobbins. It is much cheaper that way. BL also comes in a variety of colors and I'll sometimes buy the smaller spools for special projects. It also makes a great bobbin thread for machine quilting. |

Date: 4/9/12 10:44 AM I've always used bobbin thread, but recently I've been using serger thread, especially if the backside will show (like with a towel), that way I can match the back with the front, or match the towel.
I have a thread cone stand, that I use for machine sewing, and I use it when winding bobbins. ------
My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since. |

Date: 4/9/12 1:23 PM I like Coats and Clark Astra bobbin fill in lots of machines, (which is spun polyester) on the large commercial cone. Have not tried it in a Janome 300E, but it works nice and fine for me in a elna 8600, which would really be about the same thing. You probably would need a thread stand in order to wind a bobbin from it though, unless you just wanted to use a coffee cup with a coat hanger wrapped around it, as your make do thread stand. |

They're super inexpensive, and save me a whole lot of time having to wind bobbins. I'd never go back to winding my own. |

I will look into all these suggestions, I do have a thread stand so I can wind a bobbin from a larger cone, I tried this with the cheapie cone of bobbin thread and it made the bobbin thread show on the front of my work. no idea if this was caused by the thread or how I wound the bobbin.
I will have to look into the pre-wound bobbins, does anyone know what size (type) they take?

Date: 4/10/12 2:23 AM I tired the Metro prewounds on my Janome 350e and it didn't like them. The thread was thinner and the stitching pulled to the front no matter how many times I adjusted the machine. The Metro top threads work great though.
I'd love to get some other suggestions too as some of the bobbin thread is just as expensive as the top thread! I was hoping for something inexpensive, but the Janome thread really has worked the best so far for me. It's just $$$. ------

Date: 4/10/12 11:03 AM I use pre-filled bobbins without any problem on my Viking. When I need a color in the bobbin I usually use embroidery thread. I have used serger thread but the embroidery thread matches exactly and I have never had a breakage problem. ------

The Bottom Line bobbin thread (made by Superior) that I mentioned above works very well in my Bernina 730E as well as in my Bernette Deco 340 --- which is a Janome 350E with the "Bernette" badge on it. Bernina pays Janome to make the machine for them. Bottom Line has been all I use for poly threads in the Deco 340. You might want to buy a small spool and see what you think. I once bought a sampler box of various colors of Bottom Line, and they were all pre-wound on Janome bobbins.
ETA - don't be afraid to tighten the bobbin tension on your Janome 300/350 machines. I fiddle with mine all the time because I use cotton threads in my Deco 340, some are finer than others, etc. Tightening the bobbin tension just a teeny bit, after you've adjusted the top, might help those bobbin threads from coming up to the top. I has never been a problem for me in my Deco 340, even with the Bottom Line thread (which is not fuzzy at all).

This is a great idea. I have black & white that I will alternate depending on what I'm embroidering but never thought to use serger thread for other colors. |
