contemplating swimwear (KS 3072)

But the RTW swimsuit I have had for yrs now shows a little too much cleavage. I could always wear a huge t-shirt over but I don't see anyone else doing that. I looked at JCP for RTW and found a pretty one for $50 I searched on line and found everythign I need from scratch at fabric.com, minus the pattern. THe material, stretch needle, hook, elastic all for $32 with the 15% off coupon I found. I hadn't placed the order yet because it is weird. Usually sewing costs more than RTW. But I wasn't factoring in the pattern cuz I bought that 2 years ago and don't remember the cost probably 11 bucks or something like that. I didn't find lining. CS said I could just use the same fab for lining or Pongee (not sure what Pongee is) looks like somethign you use for coats. Does anyone know what would work best for lining? Also, are stretch needles better for Nylon spandex fabric than ball point? Any helpful tips for making swimwear would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is a really lightweight and soft woven lining - so as it's lightweight, it would seem appropriate; but then again, I've seemed to hear of it being used in blouses and dress pants. But I still have much to learn (!) and if the pattern states Pongee lining is suitable, well, it must be. As far as the needles go, someone may correct me if I'm mistaken but I believe that either the stretch or ballpoint needle will be appropriate.

The neck is cut lower than you think, I would cut the neckline probably three or even four inches higher when cutting out. It is much easier to then cut it down during fitting if it's too high. I've also cut the leg openings more conservatively. I would find a lightweight spandex to use for lining. Lining can do two things, for see through coverage, and for body control. If it's for see through, a lightweight spandex is fine, for body control, it can be as heavy as the fashion fabric. Sometimes a heavy spandex works well as lining when the fashion fabric is flimsy. I can't remember the actual pattern and what it calls for in lining, I have done it by lining just the front, and also have done a full front and back lining. I'll fully line a suit when I want extra flab control, and have put girdle fabric in the front as well as cups. It was a bit much with girdle fabric, as I like to breathe! I use stretch needles when sewing a swimsuit. It always troubles me when swimsuits cost so much, but the price of making one is low. The total price for a swimsuit with cups/elastics/lining/etc. is about $15. If that because I usually wait for sales. Extra swimsuit fabric (which I always have) is available to my daughters if they want a bikini, but usually it gets used up by making extra panties from the remnant. When my oldest daughter eyes up this bikini while she's at work, I tell her I can make her one for about $15-$20 instead of paying almost $50. Really. $50 for that tiny bikini. I think my rhinestone connectors are prettier than the metal circular connectors too. -- Edited on 4/16/12 9:37 AM -- ------ Big 4 Pattern size 12, RTW bottom: 6, RTW jacket 8, RTW top (no size fits me well!)
