Converting 2-piece sleeve to 1-piece How to convert a 2-piece sleeve to a 1-piece sleeve

I'm working with a very sheer fabric in a loose-fitting jacket and I'd like to avoid the extra seam required by a two-piece sleeve.
Fictionfan   Advanced VT USA Member since 5/19/06 Posts: 1168	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 6/12/12 10:11 PM I don't know if you still need this answered, but here goes: Simply line up the seam lines of the lower sleeve and upper sleeve. There will usually be a seamline that falls from the underarm and one that falls from the back armscye to over the elbow to the wrist. On a two-piece sleeve, there is usually a curve here to allow the sleeve to follow the shape of the extremity over the elbow. You can re-draw the pattern as one-piece by pinning the sleeve pieces together at one of these two seamlines. If you keep the underarm seam, you will likely have to adjust the width of the sleeve at the areas where the back seamline is not straight. If you simply make that seam line straight, the sleeve will probably feel tight and stiff. Sometimes, a small dart is present at the elbow area to force the straight sleeve to curve. The other option is to join the two pattern pieces at the underarm seam and use the curved seamline as your main sleeve seam. This will preserve the curved shape of the sleeve and be more comfortable. HTH ------ Fictionfan

You can also turn the top-of-sleeve seam into a design element. I recently read a Kenneth D. King technique that I think is brilliant: Sheer Seams and Edges. When I finally get around to making up the silk chiffon that's been languishing in my stash for two years, I'm definitely trying this!
