Just had to share... Or Why I love sewing!

Date: 4/12/12 12:40 PM So I have a standard gift for pregnant friends - it's what I call a "diaper clutch". It's a way to carry diapers and a changing pad all in one. (pictures below). Anyway, it's a pattern I made up out of necessity - and since it worked well, I now make them for friends/coworkers who are having babies. Well, my coworker called me over and gave me a bunch of compliments on it! He was very appreciative of getting a gift that I sewed myself, he loved that it was unique (even emphasized to his wife that she wouldn't find this type of gift anywhere). And he was even complimenting me on how nicely it was sewn! (Basically saying that this was something that he would buy). After a craptastic week, this was sooo nice to hear and I just thought I would share!! I can understand your co-worker's sentiments, because I would have been overjoyed to have something like this when my children were in diapers. I got really tired of schlepping the enormous diaper bag everywhere. (And since I almost never remembered to put any snacks / toys / books or a change of clothes in it, its enormousness was pretty useless.) I took a look at your website, where you have a post on this. Any chance of putting together a short tutorial? This does seem like the ideal new baby gift. ------ marjoriekh

Well, that and the fact that I eyeball where to put the velcro! I have the same issue you do with diaper bags... I never remember to put in the other stuff, so what's the point? The issue I have is that there is never any place to put them down in the bathrooms! And I refuse to put anything on the floors in public bathrooms. Ick. Steph at 3 Hours Past the Edge of the World has recently learned to digitize her patterns, and is selling some of them on Craftsy (some are free). She may be able to steer you in the right direction for info. (I think Craftsy might be a good venue for this pattern, too.) There are also professional digitizers. Kathleen Fasanella at Fashion Incubator says it's easy to have done. She charged about $25/hr in 2009, when that post was published, and she says most patterns would take less than an hour. Google 'pattern digitizing.' Also found a link for this pattern digitizing software: FashionCAD (Ouch! It's AUD$1,295.) You could start a new thread here asking what people know about digitizing. ------ marjoriekh

Could you tell us the rough dimensions? I don't really know what size a diaper is so have no idea if this is a large or small item

Upside, it's a free program. Downside, there's a bit of a learning curve. You can put images, a background, text, draw lines etc then you do a save as PDF to get a digital pattern. My pattern was a lot smaller so I scanned it and "drew" lines to copy the shape. In your case I think you should just draw it in Inkscape. For the base you can do a rectangle with rounded corners at x inches by x inches. The strap would be a rectangle strip etc.
