Date: 4/14/12 12:17 PM I love sewing clothes and slowly moved to quilting, but if I had to choose one it'd be sewing garments.
What kind of sewing do you spend the most time doing? Clothes? Quilts? Home decor?
Did you switch from one to the other over time? I remember reading threads about seamstresses moving from garment sewing to quilting over time due to the complexities of fitting patterns. I love pattern drafting/manipulation and hope I will never be so over-whelmed to just give up on making my own clothes as I age. ------

After retirement, the need for adding to my clothing collection diminished. I still make tops and pants, not for fit but for what I like and not what department stores think I like. I prefer a style that is in between mini and granny.
Quilting is my method of continuing to sew. I prefer wall hangings as piecing a full blown quilt tends to bore me.
Forums, tv programs (although few and far between) and magazines help me keep up with new and improved techniques. |

Date: 4/14/12 5:50 PM Clothes, most definitely. An occasional home dec item. Occasionally a quilt project for someone else, although I don't particularly like quilting. My interest in it is almost zero. Only do it if I have to, like a baby gift for someone else. ------
Big 4 Pattern size 12, RTW bottom: 6, RTW jacket 8, RTW top (no size fits me well!)
Measurements: 34 HB/36 FB (34C bra)/27.5/36 (and working hard to keep it that way.)
Machines: Sewing (Janome Memory Craft 3000 and Kenmore 158 Series machine), Serger (Babylock Imagine), Embroidery (Janome 300E)
If you think your sewing is better than everyone else's around here, get out of my way b****. I hate sewing snobs.

Date: 4/14/12 5:53 PM I love to sew garments but lately I've had a lot of discouraging results. My shape and weight keep changing which doesn't help. I have more success with quiltmaking, so I've turned to that for my sewing fix. I'd love to get back to more garment sewing, but every time I measure myself my size has changed again. |

Date: 4/14/12 6:22 PM Lately, mostly garment sewing. I go through stages where I'm really intrigued by blending colors and patterns together in a quilt. And then the seasons change and I'm suddenly in need of a dress...and by the tail end of a season, I'm not quite ready to sew for winter, but can't really justify making anything for summer...so I make a quilt.
I would say I prefer garment sewing, but I get an itch to make quilts too. |

I used to love sewing for DD when she was young - I made a lot of her clothes and had fun doing it. So I don't sew garments much any more unless DD really wants something. She works with primates at a zoo and I bought some gorilla fabric to make her a skirt, she thinks that will be fun.
I love to quilt. I enjoy sewing, and I love my sewing machine, but I quilt almost exclusively.
I think it is because I am just not very interested in clothes in general, but I love fabric and quilts. ------

Date: 4/14/12 6:40 PM I do both, but not at the same time. I need to arrange my sewing area differently for each type of sewing, so it's practical to do one type for awhile then switch to the other. Since I tend to set ambitious goals for myself, it helps me to feel less pressure and more creative.
I don't have a huge stash of either garment or quilting fabrics, but I like to plan projects and buy fabrics about a month before I switch. It helps me finish one kind of project before I start a new one. ------

Date: 4/14/12 7:32 PM Garments, definitely! I have never had the desire to learn to quilt and I kinda doubt I ever will. I also sew bags - purses, duffels, totes, etc. Those are a lot of fun and quick fixes, so I sew them in between garments. ------

Date: 4/14/12 7:34 PM I am now a quilter. I tried garment sewing for 8 years and I am still not happy making clothing. In fact, I used to dread going to the machine. Just to make something simple is like pulling teeth. I just can't stand it. I had to force myself to sew pajamas.
Then in Feb I decided to give quilting a try. I love it. Accurate cutting is still hard. Accurate piecing is still a challenge, but I am getting better. Now that I completed my first quilting class (but not the quilt), I can't see ever going back to clothing. I love fabris, patterns, colors and changing things around. I have found my love of sewing. Finally.

Quilting is relaxing to me. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors.
