Date: 4/20/12 3:45 AM I'm having one heck of a time trying to fit the New Look 6049:
http://www.simplicity.com/p-6120-misses-dresses.aspx
It's really infuriating! It's my first time really doing my muslin since after taking sewing classes. Back there, I had my instructor help me with my fitting, but now I'm completely on my own!
So here's the issue. I created a muslin for the tunic (but I'm making it as a dress) so it has the bust and waist darts. The bust darts are... 3-4 inches TOO LOW! I found that I had to pinch and gather above the bust darts, but I am not sure if that is the right way to resolve this issue. When I do this, how do I alter the pattern?
Another problem I have is the back. I could NOT in any way see or pin the back. It's so tough! The beauty of sewing class is that you always have a buddy or the instructor to pin things for you, but I no longer have the time (or money) to take these classes. So how do i solve this issue when I'm sewing on my own?
Anyway, fitting is really frustrating me at the moment but I really don't want to be turned off by sewing. I have such an unusual body type that I want to keep doing it - but how can I fit, when it's virtually impossible to see/reach my back?
Anyway, your feedback would be appreciated! |

Patience is the key. Be patient with yourself and the process. My husband always says - if it were easy everybody would be doing it!! ------ Get the quilters OUT OF MY WAY! |

Date: 4/21/12 10:45 AM Without knowing what your "body type" is, it's difficult to give you assistance that will help. Can you post a picture of you wearing the dress showing the dart issues?
As far as the back goes, try hand basting the darts, trying it on and (without twisting too much!) estimate how much to take in/let out the dart. You can do the same in the front.
One thing to be aware of- mark those darts - the bust darts and the waist darts carefully. Marking them incorrectly can cause issues.
Good Luck!

Date: 4/21/12 4:43 PM If you have a lot of extra material above the dart and the dart is too low, maybe you are making a size or two too big Or maybe you need some petite adjustments above the bust.
Connie is right, we might be more helpful if we could see the dress on you.
For fitting the back of my garments, I have a full length mirror(the kind you get at Wal-mart for the back of a door that costs about $5.00) and a hand held mirror. The full length mirror sits on the floor and I can move it around the room to catch the sunlight. It's not easy or ideal, but without a fitting buddy, it's the next best thing. |

Date: 4/22/12 11:53 PM Without seeing pictures, I think it's unusual for bust darts to be that low. It's normal for yur bust to hang lower as you age, for example, requiring adjustment. But if yet he darts are really that low, maybe you are cutting a size or two too big?

Date: 4/24/12 3:31 PM You could try making the muslin with the opening in the front - just for fitting purposes. Then you could check the fit of the back easier. |
