Date: 4/20/12 8:37 PM Someday, I will get brave enough and sell my Berninas. As I use and learn my vintage Singers, I come across things I have to have... a buttonholer is one of them!
So... Greist or Singer? And for which machine? And then... which model of said buttonholer? It's way too confusing for me to figure out!
I just got the most amazing set of Greist hemmers and attachment foot, and these I can get to work!

Date: 4/20/12 10:45 PM I have two Singer buttonholers, one is for the slant shank machine, and I really like them. I haven't tried a Greist. I haven't tried my Greist hemmers yet either but I do use my Singer hemmers, I love them, perfect results every time! I have a few attachments that I haven't even had time to play with yet and I have to say I'm a bit afraid to use some of them on my FWs for fear of scratching them! ------

Date: 4/20/12 11:54 PM I have a slant buttonholer for a Singer 401 and one for regular low shank like the Singer 221 featherweight. Both are fine. The slant one is newer and has several more keys to use but the performance is the same for both in my opinion. ------

Date: 4/21/12 8:48 AM I have both the Singer buttonholers for straight stitch - the common ones you always see in the green, plastic oval case (for low shank like the FW) and pink plastic case (for slant shank like the 401). I also have a Greist buttonholer which is identified only as Greist Rotary Buttonholer, no model number.
I've only used the Greist a couple of times, but it works exactly the same way and uses the same templates. I've been using the Singer buttonholer all my life. They perform the same. They are both inexpensive. You can pick one up on eBay for around $10. The Singers are probably a little easier to find, and admittedly they are a little more "fun" in their bright plastic cases. (The Greist is a no-nonsense gadget in a plain box...kinda dull in comparison!)

Date: 4/21/12 10:09 AM I have all of them. The green chest box for the short shank (the red is actually a slant, both 40s era), the one in the egg from the 60s and a Greist. All work the same, all make the same buttonholes, all use the same parts. Heck, I have one for my Kennmore that can be used on my treadle (which I don't use, but man, I have 6 buttonhole attachments). The all make nice, professional looking buttonholes.
Singer and Greist also made the cams. These are a difference, since the Greist's are plastic and Singer's are metal. Both work (and the plastic is my only eyelet cam) but I do prefer the all metal ones, so much so I have about 20 extra cams of the same sizes. |

But ditto, I only have a plastic eyelet template...an original metal one is expensive and hard to find. ------

I have Singer buttonholer in green rectangle case to use on 306K low shank. I still need to find the small template but otherwise it is nice to use. I had a Griest buttonholer but it turned out to be left position needle only so I gave that one away.
