Looking for bright red, drapey fabric for harem pants
stirwatersblue Intermediate KS USA Member since 12/13/08 Posts: 2473	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 4/23/12 5:40 PM I'm making a costume for a convention this summer, and I'm looking for some medium-weight fabric with great drape for some harem pants, kind of like these: I was thinking Tencel would be *perfect,* but I have no idea where to find any! Alternately, a nice heavy sanded silk (too $$$, maybe?) or maybe a linen-rayon blend? I don't want gauze (too lightweight/crinkly) or 100% linen (too crease-prone). Any other suggestions? (I'm actually recreating Karen Allen's Cairo ensemble from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," but I can't find a good screencap that shows her pants! This is the best I can do, alas.) Here's a shot: A red rayon broadcloth seems like it could work, if you could find one. If you want to splurge for silk, Golden Silks has a bright red sanded charmeuse, as well as a silk crepe. Those are both close to $30 a yard. The raw silk noil is $10.95, but it may not have the drape you need. Gorgeous Fabrics has this linen/rayon blend for $14, which is supposed to be drapey. Fashion Fabrics Club is where I think I got the red I used before. But you'd have to get a swatch to see if it's the right color. To make the pants in the movie still, you'll have to cut a great deal fuller than the green pants in the pic, IMHO.

I'll check out my local store. Marjorie, I actually think the noil looks lovely (I googled images of noil dresses to see what the drape is like, and it looks good). Sauvage, THANK YOU! That linen velveteen (which I want on principle LOL) won't work, obviously , BUT they have the deep purple velveteen that I need for another project, and for a great price! So that was a very helpful link! But... would wool crepe work? Fabric.com is having a sale, and they have some bright red poly/wool crepe for $2.79! It has their infamous "full fold drape" we were wondering about a few weeks ago. Crepe is a fabric I think of for things like sheath dresses, not drapey things. After washing about 10 times it gets OH so soft, then the weight is nicer - and the flow is better... just putting my 20 cents worth ------ I have great enthusium for sewing, but lack talent to be great. 2013

I think we actually have her!DH also bought a gold idol (resin, really), but it ended up being too heavy to tote around. If anyone is still interested in the fate of this project, I DID end up going with the red wool crepe, and it was lovely to work with. The harem pants turned out beautifully, although I never got to wear them! (Family illness = cancelled trip.) Hopefully this year! ------ ~Gem in the prairie
