I've starting this season's costume planning, and I need a bolero jacket--pretty basic: no collar, long sleeves, cut straight at the front hem (tho' I can modify that if necessary). I will be making it from velveteen, and modifying the sleeves to slit bell sleeves (which is another post for a different forum!).

I've found some patterns, but I'm not finding many reviews on them. Hoping someone on the boards has some experience or more suggestions!

This seems to look the most like what I want, but the one reviewer wasn't enthusiastic about it (she didn't care for the style but wasn't specific about why):

Oh! It looks like the new Simplicity 1819 has a bolero, WITH bell sleeves already. Maybe that will work...

Hi! Simplicity 3799 has a really nice bolero with short sleeves, you could modify the sleeve...

I've made several boleros:

Simplicity 3867 - See photos here

March 2009 KnipMode - See photos here

MyImage Summer 2011 - See photos here

The last one I made in an uncut corduroy, which is very much like a cotton velveteen, too!

This isn't exactly like what you linked to, but Simplicity Sew Simple has a nice little short-sleeved bolero: 1830. I bought it recently but haven't made it yet. They also have a short vest that could probably be turned into a long-sleeved bolero pretty easily: 1829.

I've made this bolero Butterick 3345 and it's fabulous. Very quick and easy and it looks like it has all the requirements you're looking for.

I'm actually liking this one a lot, particularly the full-length option of View D. I tried on a shrug in my closet with the rest of the pieces I'll be wearing, and let's just say I'm not totally satisfied with the current back view!
