Do you wash RTW before wearing? Spin off from the prewashing fabric thread

I have my own rules about this, but wondered what others thought. I have to wash jeans and other washable pants to prepare for hemming and yes, they all have to be hemmed! All undergarments are prewashed before wearing to get out chemical residue and any dirt from the factory floor, dust from the store and stuff I don't want to think about from other shoppers trying it on or just handling it on the rack. T shirts and tops are usually washed, but probably only 98% of the time. There might be one I can't resist wearing right away from time to time. Sweaters, jackets and socks are really RTW. Everything gets washed before he wears it - including socks. Probably only really needed to do that when he was a newborn, but just continued doing it. For me - eh.. depends on how much I want to wear it first and when laundry day is relative to when I buy something. Socks and jackets never get washed first though (again, only for me). Date: 4/24/12 8:05 PM Every piece of clothing I buy or receive as a gift gets washed now. All it takes is just once to break out in a horrible rash to want that to never happen again. I wash all RTWs before wearing because I don’t want any chemical residues and I don’t know who tried them on last (if they were clean, had rashes, etc). I also wash everything I make before wearing too...

Clothing, bedding, towels, sofa slipcovers, hats and scarves, etc. I even wash ready made drapes before I put them up because of the chemical smell. I am another one who gets rashes from the chemicals on textiles. All fabric gets washed before cutting out too. If I can't put it into a washing machine (or hand wash), I won't buy it. Only exclusion is my wedding dress and footwear.

Dark fabrics I often wash/treat before wearing to set the dye. I never hem any of my pants until they've been washed at least twice to avoid suprises. Date: 4/25/12 1:25 AM I don't think I've ever in my life washed a piece of RTW clothing before wearing it. I don't think there is any chance I'll catch some nasty from another person on a bit of fabric, and I am not bothered about factory/chemical residue enough to wait before wearing my new purchase.

Never really thought about the chemicals in fabrics or factory dirt, but those are valid points. The idea of other, unknown bodies inside the clothes is what has me washing them! DH thinks it is silly of me to wash things before he wears them. Or even before I shorten his pants. I gave in once, and hemmed his pants without washing, he wore them, I washed them. He was shocked that they were too short when he wore them a second time. The thought of that and the gross things that people have on their hands is more than enough to make me wash just about everything before wearing it. Also, after working in retail and seeing how people put things on the floor that hasn't been washed in who knows how long in between racking them....ugh. Just too many reasons to wash before wear. I think it's more the idea of the "unknown person" than me being a complete germophobe. At least, that's what I tell myself anyway. ^^; ------ Call me Han. I'll try anything once :)
