Thread What's a good brand?

When I asked which brand to use, the lady at the shop directed me to their thread wall that consisted of quilting thread. I don't quilt very often. My sewing is primarily clothing so I thought this was an unusual comment to make. Now, I've always used C&C because that's what's usually available at Joann's. There aren't any other fabric stores around and I hesitate to buy online for fear the color won't match. Is Coats & Clark really that bad? Does anyone have other brands to recommend? Some machines do best with certain brands.. My pfaffs for instance.. prefer gutermann without a doubt. I can't tell you I do not sew with Coats and Clerk any longer.. as most of my machines do better with a better thread.. but there are lots of machines that do well with it.. apparently your machine is not one of them. Gutermann has many lines out. quilting, polyester, cotton etc.. BUT so do many other really good brands.. thats just the brand I use the most.. I have lots of Mettler also. . And I buy prewound bobbins from my janome dealer and haven't even ever asked what brand of thread is on them.. I use them in my Janomes of course. Since your tech said switch brands.. do so.. it can't hurt to try some other brands.. If you can advise us which model you have then those of us that have that model can advise you best..

I have used Coats & Clark for years and years and I don't have a problem. Before all the Hancocks stores in this area closed, I used to also buy Mettler Metrosene which is fine but no longer available to me locally and like you, I need to match my fabric colors. You will find some people that say C&C is bad and their machine doesn't like it so they should buy something else. But honestly, if you are not having a problem with it, why change?

There are many good brands. If your sewing machine does not fuss about thread then ou can use what ever you want. I like Mettler Metrosene and Gutterman Sew-All both are good polyester threads. One can purchase a thread card that is enormously helpful in choosing colors. I like to order from Wawak which formally was Atlanta Thread. It is worth signing up for their email which comes only occassionally. Sales are fantastic and a good time to stock up on thread. Real Thread Chart - Gutterman Sew All Mettler Metrosene Poly Real Thread Chart Coats and Clark Color Cross Reference C&C Color Chart I have purchased from Wawak and Uncommon Threads with very satisfactory results. How did the repairman know? If there are physical traces of thread left inside the machine-- then that may be something to be concerned about. But if it's just a friendly reminder relayed to all customers-- then it's less worrisome, and more of a sales pitch. I use Gutterman (polyester) in my Bernina 330, because it's what's sold within walking distance. I tried Metler Metrosene, which, IIRC, is what the bobbin cases are calibrated with, but I found it to be very linty.

Date: 4/27/12 11:31 PM I also find that Gutterman thread works best in all my machines (all Singers). I like the fact that they are polyester which means less shrinkage. (At least that is what I've been told.)

I remember reading somewhere that C&C had upgraded their thread, changing factories or something. It was quite a while back. If your repairman is older he may be reporting outdated information.

I sew mostly garments and haven't had any issues but once. I got the C&C with the cotton on the outside and polyester core. That stuff was a complete disaster. It was so linty. Made a mess in my machine and the stitch looked awful.

BUT, if they don't have a color that matches perfectly, I've definitely bought my share of C&C thread and, to be honest, didn't notice much of a difference. I have a Singer and a Brother and neither has had any trouble with those threads. Now, I did get a spool of some crappy no-name brand that came with something and when I used that, I noticed a BIG difference! Personally I would find out why the tech said that... whether it was something wrong with your machine (like that thread caused it to break) or it's just a general warning. I've used quilting thread on my garments with out any problems as well. I've heard basically that gutterman (sp) is a lot less linty, maybe your machine had a ton of lint? I know you can buy gutterman and sulky and possibly the mettler all at joann's! I usually get it on the 40 percent off or more sales! (sometimes it's buy one get one free, or something like that, like black friday sales!). I get the large cones of the colors that get used a lot, like ivory/cream, that melds into a lot of fabrics, so I use a LOT of it. ------ Visit my blog http://www.heathersprairie.blogspot.com
