Date: 4/28/12 11:08 AM Hope I posted this in the correct place. My daughter has a cute skirt and I would like to copy it (and make it longer! Those long thin legs are model worthy, but hard to shop for!) The waist band is made of colored elastic, about 2 in wide, in a beautiful fushia color, and then the fabric is stitched directly to the bottom of the elastic so that the elastic is a focal point of the skirt. I would attach a photo but I don't know how to.. any tutorials on that by the way?
Any how, I have looked at JoAnn's, Hancocks, etc. and not found anything except black and white. I'd love to make some cute skirts in the same style with several colors, but can't find anything. Any ideas? |

Date: 4/28/12 11:30 AM I just found some colored elastic at my local JoAnn's, but closer to 1" wide rather than 2" wide. I did see some black in varied widths. Can you use the black? Date: 4/28/12 11:48 AM Farmhouse Fabrics has some that's 1 1/2" wide. Do a search for decorative elastic on their site. |

Date: 4/28/12 12:24 PM THIS is a circle skirt tut, but it also has the info on how to sew an elastic waistband.
You can dye the elastic. There's a link in that tut to her page where she compares several dyes on elastic. |

Date: 4/28/12 12:47 PM I've looked for this, too.
Another place to check is etsy;
AC Clothing and Bags has some 2 1/2 and even three inch elastics, but may not be the bright colors you're looking for. They have navy in 3 inch, and some striped elastics that are 2 1/2 inches wide.
Here's a bright purple 2 inch at Silvermint Supplies.
Puffytots has many, many 1, 2, 3 and even 4 inch elastics in lots of bright colors, but they are out of Singapore -- not sure how you feel about that.
WithLace has a few more muted colors, as well as a metallic gold.

Date: 4/28/12 1:27 PM This is all really helpful as I had the same question. Thanks to all. I found the Tutorial to dye the elastic yourself and her results were a vibrant, evenly colored elastic. Looked easy, but so does watching someone else juggle.
The circle skirt Tut is also very clear and well detailed.
------ Sometimes she didn't always follow the recipe.

Date: 4/28/12 10:16 PM Thank you to all who posted. I had wondered about dying elastic, but didn't know if I would simply have a mess! LOL! Glad to know it is possible. The links were very helpful! |

Date: 4/28/12 11:24 PM Funny, but I saw the bright colors in elastic for the first time at JoAnn's today. Like the earlier post, it wasn't as wide as you are looking for. I haven't checked them out on line. I was actually thinking of trying some out on shorts for my toddler granddaughter, but want to read some tutorials first. Timely question for me. Thank you! |

The idea of dying the elastic sounds wonderful for summer skirts! ------ The Destashification Project - Stash Couture! |
