Date: 4/28/12 8:22 PM I just purchase several pieces of cotton for some summer dresses. I picked two Butterick patterns up at Joann's sale today, B5602 and B5719. I hope I can make them work on my body type. Though, I guess I didn't look close enough to pattern because when I got home I see I should have gotten lining. Though, what do you use to line cotton that would be cool and also silky enough that the dress will lay correctly and not ride up. I am waiting for you ladies expert advise since I am just clueless. |

Date: 4/28/12 8:44 PM I recently used Bemberg rayon for lining a cotton dress (which is really cute BTW... :)) and will not use cheaper lining again. When I made B5602 last year, I stated in my review that I took out the lining because it was disastrous after working with it in construction. I can't wait to see your dresses...those patterns are both cute! ------ my blog: http://kf-biblioblog.blogspot.com/

Date: 4/29/12 7:28 AM I did read your review and that is what prompted my quesiton. I you don't mind me asking, what happened and what type of lining did you use? Also where did you get your Bemberg rayon? |

Date: 4/29/12 11:47 AM I made some errors in inserting the lining, and when I removed the lining to re-install, it disintegrated. Then, I had to trim and resew...but it hung off grain, and was very electric (I live in a dry climate). It stuck to everything...me, the dress, my legs. It climbed up my legs when wearing. I removed it and fixed the dress. It really is fine without a lining.
I had used $3/yd poly from JA. Recently I bought the bemberg from JA.

Date: 4/29/12 2:53 PM What about a slip or half-slip? If you line with rayon, you can no longer wash the dress, and I really prefer to wash my summer cottons. Anyway, debating this now myself as some lovely Tana lawn just followed me home from Liberty! |

I have washed dresses lined with Bemberg rayon, and pressed the lining when the dress comes from the dryer slightly damp. It's interesting that so many people have different results with rayon-it must be the dryer or the iron settings. ------ my blog: http://kf-biblioblog.blogspot.com/

Date: 4/29/12 4:53 PM You can self-line, or use a thinner cotton such as batiste or even silk organza to give a nice crisp finish. Be sure to pre-shrink first - and be aware that some cottons shrink 'progressively' so wash/dry a few times before cutting out, if you intend to wash your garment.
I wouldn't use Bemberg rayon for a cotton garment, unless it is a very heavy cotton like a tapesty. Bermberg is used in a jacket - it is slippery and enables the jacket to slide on easily. |

Date: 4/29/12 5:53 PM I love silk for lining cotton. Just wash first. A good source for neutral colored silk is dharma trading co. Best of luck! ------ "Let's make the most of this day"
