Date: 5/2/12 7:56 PM I have Quilt Design Wizard (simple program made by EQ) which I've used to make several wall hangings. I find it very useful since I do not get quilt magazines, etc. Just last night I got an amazing deal on an unopened EQ5. I know it is no longer being sold, but it will work for me. I'm looking forward to the many features it offers. ------

Date: 5/3/12 0:26 AM I've had it for versions 4, 5, and 6. I use it for every quilt I make. Not for the patterns, though. I create the blocks I have in a non-computerized pattern, take pics of my fabrics and import them into EQ. Then I can play and test out different quilts in the computer, to make sure I'm going to be happy with the final. You can even put embroidery on your electric quilts!
There's a learning curve, as with any software, but I've found their support videos to be very helpful. |

Date: 5/3/12 8:34 AM I'm looking forward to being able to scan my fabrics into EQ5. I just bought a nice selection (charm pack, jelly roll and yardages) from older Moda line. It's called Hartfield and every fabric is based on Jane Austen's time period. I have enough to make at least several wall hanging sized quilts.
Quilt Design Wizard was so easy to use, so I'm hoping I can learn the EQ5 quickly. Does anyone know of any online groups for EQ? ------

Also if tou are using new fabrics, I found sometimes it is easier to get fabric pics from a website than to scan them in. for packs, I like fatquartershop.com because theygroup by collection. The eq website used to have downloads of popularcollections. I domt know if they still do, but probably they will have some good suggestions |

Date: 5/3/12 9:50 AM I have both Electric Quilt and QuiltPro.
I don't make pieced quilts that often, but when I do I never make one exactly like I see. I put the blocks in EQ and then play with the colorways until I get something that inspires me.
I don't bother to can my fabrics in - I just find something that's sort of close. Value is what's most important.
A couple of years ago I made a quilt using fabric that had animals in picture frames. I wanted to fussy cut the frames, and that left me with a pile of randomly shaped rectangles. I used EQ to design a layout using those shapes without having to resort to padding them out to the same size.
I use QuiltPro because several of Carol Doak's books came with CDs of the blocks the uploaded into QuiltPro. Other than that I think it is very similar to EQ.
I do personally find, though, that EQ is not particularly intuitive, at least for me. I have found Fran Gonzalez's classes at QuiltUniversity to be very helpful. The next beginning class is in July. ------

Date: 5/3/12 10:00 AM I've used it since version 3 and can't possibly imagine making quilts without it! I also use it to design pillows, totes etc for ideas in fabric layouts or adding embroidery.
If for nothing else, I'd use it for all the measuring and match calculations alone, because I'm a mathematical idiot and would never get those right on my own.  ------

Date: 5/3/12 5:52 PM I use it quite a bit when designing traditional quilts. (it's of no use for art quilts) It is so fast an easy to mess around with the color values, see the secondary patterns with alternating 2 blocks, sashing or not, piced borders and doing the match for rotary cutting.
I don't scan fabrics. The fabric library is large enough to allow me to play with prints and values to get a good feel for a potential quilt. (The scale of prints is often distorted anyway, you can't really get an accurate mock up.) I just like making shifts in coloring that would take forever to mock up in colored pencil. Those - what if the star points are light and the background dark? Can I make the design flow into the alternate blocks and make the "blocky-ness" disappear? Will this look better in an even number of blocks or an odd number? What if I rotate blocks?
I can quickly see a bunch of possible variations and have a good feel for which direction I want to go. (Sometimes that is after I've picked out a stack of coordinating fabrins, sometimes before.) |
