My sewing room is a DISASTER!

I HATE not having places to put things, but right now there just isn't enough storage to put my 2 corner piles of stuff on/into. I have a few neatly folded shelves of fabric, then 2 corners of a massive pig-pile-mess of homeless fabric. I can't even sew in there....it's like naviagting a maze. On a lighter note, my grandson just got a really cool tool set for his birthday, and it came with a power drill/screwdriver. SO CUTE! Well he brought it upstairs and was 'helping' me put my shelves together with his little power screwdriver. MELT That child is SO completely adorabull! ------ Cathryn

Look how messy artists' studios can be--consider it a creative genius at work. (Many guys' garages are a mess too, they say, "I know where everything is.") Do you have a closet? Those 7-10 compartment hanging sweater/shoe bags that fit over the rod work, even hang them on a rolling rack without a closet. Easy access plus no unstacking bins. Get that little guy's dad to add high shelves--at the top of most closets there's a lot of air space where you can put stash you don't need to get to for a while. That what H. did, gained a lot of space for Christmas prints, flannel for winter, blankets. If members have a designated sewing room, nail a bunch of white square cubes or bins or wastebaskets on the wall facing out. A neighbor has about 40 (like 5 rows of 8 across) high in her garage, which hold all the family shoes for many teen sports (nothing else allowed) so it looks really neat. With rolled fabric in they could look like artwork!

My room is not too bad at the moment, but storage is never a waste, you can always find something to put in there. It is a small 10x10 bonus room. I have a table and a desk, and some of the closet shelving right on the wall. I just removed the hanging pole and added 4 more shelves. I have a HUGE storage bin filled with the remnants of my dance costume and prom dress making days. I think I found a home for most of the spandex and stretchy sequins! That leaves me with my satin and lacey-sequined-embroidered dress fabric that I just can't part with. I also have TONS of knit fabric, it is my favorite fabric for skirts and simple tops, plus the linings for diapers for my grandson. It is SLOWLY getting there, and I have found some really beautiful fabric I forgot I even had. I found 9 yards of adorabull monkey flannel! I do like the cubes on the wall idea. Right now I have 2 walls pretty much covered with shelving, and the last 2 are waiting for my husband to put up my cute bulldog pictures. ------ Cathryn

Date: 5/4/12 9:47 PM Last fall I promised myself that I would add shelves to the one full wall in my sewing room. I too have that little pile of stuff that keeps ketting moved around the room. But I still don't have the shelves. I like GrammaB's ideas. I did add shelves in my closet but that now has to be reorganized too. I am planning on pulling every thing that does not have a proper place and decide if it is woth keeping or not. Some of it are magazines which I have saved for specific patterns but I think it is time to purge. I can not possibly do it all. Date: 5/4/12 11:36 PM My sewing room does not stay organized more than a few weeks after I clean it up. Sometimes cleaning in there feels like a complete waste of time. If I could stop myself from starting another project before I have completed the current project it would stay tidy longer. ------ Ada

Date: 5/4/12 11:37 PM Sounds like your grandson likes your sewing room just fine. I decided that hanging all my fabric wasted too much space. Now, smaller pieces are folded to the same size and stacked. Premium or project pieces are hung. Very long lengths remain on bolts. Most of the fabric is folded to shelf depth, lengthwise, rolled and then tied with scraps. Very easy to pull a roll out and plug it back in without disrupting the stack. My space is just a foot wider than yours. I tried shelves on two walls and it closed the room off too much for me. One wall of shelves does store a lot though. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct.

Date: 5/5/12 10:53 AM As far as I'm concerned, if you can find what you're looking for fast, you're organized. Everything hidden neatly in boxes and closets may look nice, but doesn't work if you have to tear it apart to find what you're looking for. I have shelves covering 2 walls, and they are closing in the room because they are stuffed with books. If you do put them up, don't cover all the walls - leave open areas for pretty things and breathing room. If you do cover all the walls, exert more control than I have in filling them up, perhaps designating areas as book and fabric free zones. The shoe bags that hang on the back of doors can hold quite a few small pieces of fabric as well. My room is needing a cleanout again as well. Unfortunately not due to sewing activity, just the stuff I've hauled home in the last few months
