Date: 5/5/12 12:57 PM My 10 yo daughter found a hot pink cotton blend fabric with black tiger stripes that she would like made into a skirt, so I'm looking for a pattern. She doesn't like wearing a skirt w/o shorts underneath, so I'd prefer to add knit shorts as part of the skirt, as many of her RTW skirts have been. The skirt will need to be pretty simple, as there is no way I'll be able to match the pattern along many seam lines. Any suggestions on patterns, or how to add the shorts to a basic skirt pattern?
Thanks. |

Date: 5/5/12 1:14 PM Jalie has patterns of skirts with attached shorts since they have a lot of skating dress patterns etc. You can look at their instructions online. I love their patterns - especially 2456 but I can't see they have that one anymore. 3025 also has the attached panties.

Date: 5/5/12 5:21 PM Thanks for the reference. The tutorial makes inserting the shorts look very easy.
Maybe I'll be able to work up the nerve to try working w/o a specific pattern. |

Date: 5/5/12 5:43 PM Thanks, JEF. I hadn't looked at the Jalie before. There are a couple of possibilities for my dd, and a couple more I may try for myself. |

Date: 5/5/12 7:55 PM I have used this Carla C pattern several times with great success. It has three skirt options and VERY thorough instructions!

Date: 5/6/12 1:02 AM If you have a pattern for elastic-waist leggings, make the shorts from that and attach to the skirt before applying the waistband. Cut the legs at the appropriate place and hem. |

Subject: girls skirts with attached shorts Date: 5/6/12 1:30 AM Also you might want to try to look for vintage scooter skirts. Sometimes these come up very cheaply. |

Date: 5/6/12 7:26 PM I recently made a skort using the Isabella pattern by 5 Berries. I LOVE the way it turned out (I have made it three times now). I posted a review a couple of weeks ago. Skorts are great! |

Date: 5/7/12 0:30 AM Butterick 4503 and McCall's 4762 are current patterns that work well for my daughter when she wants to wear a skirt but has to have shorts under it for school.
B3832 and McCall's 9369 are nearly identical patterns. This group has a cute top, view A and B, that I made several of very quickly. It was fun to sew. The skort was a bit big and DD did not like the tie thing.
Butterick's See&Sew 5591 is nearly identical to McCall's 3677 with fewer options. I have made these skorts from M3677 many times. I don't like the way the waistband instructions are written, so I do it an easier way, but the elastic in back only is nice.
DD is no longer liking the wider legs of the shorts because the style is for narrower legs on the shorts these days, so I've modified these basic patterns for the current style. Only works with stretch fabrics, though. For wovens, stick with the wider legs for movement ease.
ETA: I gave patterns for smaller sizes as well as the usual sizes for the older girls. At that age, I have no idea what size your child may be.
Also, I forgot to give the Simplicity pattern links, but that website is much slower for me to search. There aren't as many in the Simplicity group of companies.
All of these patterns are on sale with regularity at Joann Fabrics for $1.99 or 99 cents. I think there is a sale next weekend, in fact. The other patterns mentioned are more expensive in the US because they aren't likely to be on sale.
