Date: 5/5/12 10:50 PM Hello
I have probably silly question, but since I got my new sm, ruffle foot to it and a serger, I need some help to understand how to calculate and set ruffler foot, or serger for gathering.
I'm making knit bubble dress for my daughter. I have to ruffle top and bottom of the skirt. I know how to do it old fashion way, but how to know correct setting for my ruffling foot ? I know I can do samples, but it's going to ruin so much fabric and there is almost nothing left after cutting the dress
I hope a miracle formula exits to calculate correct amount of ruffles without waisting lots of fabric for samples ------ I'm sorry for my poor grammar. English is not my first language.

Date: 5/5/12 11:31 PM I always have the same issue, I generally like a full ruffle so I have at least twice as much ruffle so a 2 to 1 ratio. Having said that different materials ruffle differently. I usually take a 10" strip and see how it gathers and then measure the finished length.
I have found several youtube videos that show you different ways to figure it out. ------ Formerly The Canadian |

Date: 5/6/12 11:57 AM That attachment about ruffler foot is AWESOME, but I'm wondering if there is something similar out there for sergers?? I prefer to use that (faster), but have the same issues about setting the differential correctly, etc.
Anybody know of any resources out there about the serger & ruffling/gathering?? ------ Brother Innovis 1250D

Date: 5/6/12 12:43 PM Last fall I took a class at the local sewing dealer's shop on making a tiered, ruffled skirt to attach to a girl's t-shirt. The focus was on mastering the ruffler foot on our own machines. It was a great experience and the little dresses were just so danged cute. I highly recommend these kinds of classes to help demystify sewing tools and techniques. ------ Indecision may or may not be my problem. -Jimmy Buffet

Date: 6/3/12 11:49 AM For sergers, I think some have a gathering foot, I think you can also take advantage of a differential feed, and sew a gathered layer to a straight piece.
