Gathering and ruffling Need some help

I'm making knit bubble dress for my daughter. I have to ruffle top and bottom of the skirt. I know how to do it old fashion way, but how to know correct setting for my ruffling foot ? I know I can do samples, but it's going to ruin so much fabric and there is almost nothing left after cutting the dress I hope a miracle formula exits to calculate correct amount of ruffles without waisting lots of fabric for samples ------ I'm sorry for my poor grammar. Having said that different materials ruffle differently. I usually take a 10" strip and see how it gathers and then measure the finished length. The focus was on mastering the ruffler foot on our own machines. It was a great experience and the little dresses were just so danged cute.
