My Janome 200 does lettering but doesn't do true monograming. Do I need monograming software, and if so, what program do you prefer?

If you're going to do nothing but monogramming, then get software. If you just need a few options, it would probably be cheaper to check out some online embroidery sites and download a few alphabets and frames. I can't remember the site, but there's a really neat site for monogramming, and that's all they do. Lots of pretty alphabets, and complex enough I wouldn't want to digitize them myself.

I use Monogram Wizard. Expensive, but easy to use. I believe the site that biochemistress is referring to is this one:

The best out there IMO is Monogram Wizard Plus. You can see it at www.needleheads.com and they even have a free download version to try it out, though you can't save. I think there is a free one with it to try out for quality. While there, take a look at all the alphabets and motifs available from the alphabet online store. The quality is top of the line. You can search online for prices and here is a good one www.marvelouscreations.com

To justify the cost of Monogram Wizard, keep in mind you can use it for light design editing (sizing, merging designs, changing thread colors).
