Anyone seen this yet? I guess it was on HBO before.
PBS announced it for Sept. with 6 episodes.

I keep waiting for US television to do smart dramatic series
instead of dozens more cop shows, sexed-up dramas,
potty-mouthed comedies. I was a fan of Parenthood (Ron Howard, family man?) then the finale had the teens going to bed-yuk!
Now my only favorites are NatGeo and Discovery, and Harry's Law is getting cancelled! So much for mature real women on TV.

I've just discovered the British Series "Doc Martin". I love the characters, stories and humor. Sure is in stark contrast to most American shows, which I find demeaning to humans and society.

Thanks so much for telling us about this series. It looks fabulous.

Here's the BBC's page about "Call the Midwife" -- amazingly, I'm actually able to access the clips. Just the clips -- even in Britain it looks like they want people to buy the DVD's instead of watching online.

I haven't seen the show, but I have read the books on which it was based and they are terrific. I will probably watch the show when it comes on.

Is that the one with Miranda Hart in it? I love her sitcom, she's so funny in it, and I've seen trailers for some one-off show with her going tramping with Bear Grylls that seems well worth watching!

I haven't seen Call The Midwife yet but the trailers make it seem entertaining. I will try to watch it if I can figure out when it's on.

I love "Doc Martin!" Seasons 1-4 are streamable on Netflix. Also, have you seen "Foyle's War?" It is a British drama that my PBS station ran for a while. There were 6 seasons in all. You can rent the DVD's from Netflix or possibly your local library. It is set in England during WWII and the period details are wonderful. Also, every episode highlights at least one little known/unknown aspect of everyday life during that war.

That sums it up very well!

I'm looking forward to the next season of Doc Martin arriving at Netflix.

Bramwell was a good mini series. It is available on Netflix now.

I agree completely. Larkrise to Candleford is another wonderful BBC production that we are just finishing from Netflix.

Liz, thanks for pointing out Bramwell--will add to the que.

Yes, it is. But she's definitely not playing the charcter of her sit-com. Her role in this one is very different and she plays it well. The series, when originally shown over here in UK, was Sunday evening gentle family drama-viewing. It's a rose-tinted view of that particular era & part of London.
