We have discussed this before, but it was a while ago. I was clunking around the sewing room and remembered the good stories other people have.

I have Birkenstocks as my indoor shoes most of the time, but I need the feel of the pedal under my bare or socked foot to make my machines work well. So I slip one off and often leave it off while I iron or get fabric or whatever. It must look ridiculous! Plus on rainy days like this I get one very cold foot.

Yes, I like to drive and sew with my one foot bare or socked.

Gives you a better FEEL for the ROAD.

I don't wear shoes in the house(summer or winter). We have carpet on most all the floors, with the exception of the bathrooms and kitchen. I have found this wonderful little slipper pattern(Simplicity 2278) and have made about 5 pair from this. If my feet do get cold, I will slip these on. I made two pair for the river cottage, the "indoor" pair and the "porch" pair They are thin enough to feel the pedal.

I can only sew in bare feet. Even socks have to come off. I have a small space heater I put under my sewing table if it is really cold.

I also have to sew bare footed. I leave my shoes by the door and wear socks, which also act nicely as thread catchers.

Kate - I have a pair of knit slippers that have the non-skid dots on the bottom. They are such effective thread catchers! They are also a pale green, so they look dirty and old within minutes of putting them on. They go well with my saggy sewing pants and circa 1995 fleece pullover I wear for sewing.

This is why I love my vintage Singers. Knee pedal or hand crank all the way, baby!

(I do get one cold foot using my serger when I'm prepping fabric pieces or sewing knits. This is the minority of my sewing, though.)

My sewing room is in a daylight basement with a concrete subfloor.
In the winter I wear wool socks with clogs or crocs, otherwise I feel the cold floor through my regular shoes/slippers. No problem sewing with the thick soles.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
