Subject: Men's button-down turned into underbust vest Date: 5/21/12 10:53 PM
I found a quick tutorial for this project on Livejournal; unfortunately, the post was quite old and most of the links were broken, so I had to improvise a little.
We hit up Goodwill and picked out one of the ugliest men's button-downs we could find. Actually, it makes a pretty cute vest! The front doesn't come up as high as I'd like and the waist could be a bit tighter, but it's not bad for a quickie project.
Basically, I held the shirt up to see how much fabric I'd need, then cut all the way around. We had to make a primitive swayback adjustment, but aside from reconciling the massive difference between my rib/waist area and my hips, that was the only challenge. I added some fabric from an older project and made some halter straps for decoration.
The shirt I'm wearing in the photo TOTALLY clashes with the fabric, but I was too lazy to change just to take a picture. I'm planning to wear it with a black t-shirt to work tomorrow.
The fit here, especially at the waist, could probably be improved. I'm sort of burned out on sewing right now, having finished two projects in the same day, but I'll probably revisit this in a couple of weeks and see if anything else can be done.
