I am in the midst of hemming pants (thank you discount store shopping that lets me re-wardrobe without huge financial strain!) and was working on some lovely jeans (in fact they are Calvin Kleins for under $20) and as I did my usual measure and turn technique, I had to stop myself.

As a petite with short legs (I have to hem petite pants and some capris almost fit as full length ) I have been hemming my pants since I was about 13. I measure by standing in front of a mirror, turn under, pin, check, pin and go. I pin one or two spots and measure the hem against those two spots and hope for the best. Not the ideal system, but it is quick!

This time I started doing the guesstimating and fudging and all the stuff that went through my head as a teen ("they're only jeans, it doesn't matter," "nobody but me will know," "I'll even it up as I sew," "the ruler is too far away/lost/in the other room" etc.) and my grown up sewing voice just jumped right in and told myself to get up, get the ruler and do it right, for goodness sake! and I did. And my jeans look spectacular.

PS - thanks to the weight loss support forums. Now could you help pay for the new clothes?

Subject: Is this the wisdom as we age Ive heard about? Date: 5/26/12 11:47 PM

I've noticed, in trying to teach my daughter how to sew, that I take a lot of shortcuts. I very rarely measure the turn up on a hem, I eyeball it, turn, press and sew. But when my daughter attempted to do the same, hers was an uneven mess. "You never said to measure..." True, but my "eyeballing" is very accurate after 30 years.

We had a similar discussion about pinning...

But, the young, lazy sewing me would pick patterns without darts or zippers. It's possible they looked OK on a youthful me, but I bet they just looked sloppy. (In my defense, styles in the late 80s-early 90s was very loose with dropped shoulders.) I was very much a make-it-tonight-wear-it-tomorrow girl! Now, I pass by patterns without fitting darts, with elastic waists, or lose enough to not need buttons or zipper. Yes, sewing clothes that actually fit takes longer - but FIT is the point, not speed or sheer quantity! I'm more concerned now with creating a flattering garment, even when it takes longer to finish.

I find that the thrift shops/garage sales (is Ca. big on them like here?) are yielding more finds these days. Maybe it's a small job increase or winter blues de-stash or need to treat oneself despite the economy, so ladies and stores are donating.
A hardly-used full skirt gives you lot of fabric to re-fashion a top, a man's shirt can be a woman's tunic, etc. There are lot of tips and blogs online for re-purposing RTW, so that's another source for "new clothes!"
