Working on a Holiday, Again! I'm sure I'm not alone..whine/rant here

The majority of the time, I go in at midnight and work until 8:30 am. It's nice that I have the days free, but do have to go to bed by about 3pm. However, I do prefer that to working during the day. I work in a large retail store and since we also have a grocery department, we only close on Christmas Day. The only other occupation I could think of that has the same situation is food service. Don't most medical and other types of emergency workers get to trade off holidays? Is anyone else in the same situation?? In his department, once you have some seniority, they schedule you for alternate major holidays (ie, if you work Thanksgiving, you get Christmas off). He's working today, but will be off at 6. He was a retail manager with Target when we met, and I hated Black Friday those first few years. He'd have to get up at 3am and our whole Thanksgiving weekend would be shot from him being so tired. I was in restaurant management for several years and ditto...I worked every holiday except Christmas and Thanksgiving (but still had to work the day after Thanksgiving). Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Easter, Labor Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, you name it. And of course EVERY WEEKEND. My days off were Tues-Wed when everyone else was at work. DH hated my schedule and the last straw was when my youngest son turned 10 and he said that all he wanted for his birthday (on a Saturday) was for me to be home. We usually had one or two holidays off a year - taking turns, and weekends and shifts rotated as well of course (I usually worked straight evenings). I got to appreciate days off in the week because everything is open then, and you can actually make it to a bank or a haircut or whatever. So it didn't bother me to work the various holidays or weekends that much, but now that I don't I can't complain - that's for sure. Hope you get (got) some time to enjoy today anyway after work. We would usually feed/milk a little earlier and perhaps a bit later on Christmas or Thanksgiving but twice a day like clockwork 365 days a year sick or well. Vet daughter and her vet husband have call on holidays but both work in offices that rotate the holidays. They try hard to set their schedule so they are both working the same holiday and can sometimes come here for a couple of days for one of them. It is nearly impossible for all 3 of the girls to make it here on a holiday so we don't make a big deal of it any more. Now that we no longer have a dairy herd to work around the children are adults with their own schedules. Now we work around one set of grands visitation schedule with that daughter's ex at holidays so we had our Christmas last year at 5:00 pm Christmas day. The more family members with work schedules the more complicated get togethers become so we just sort of take a head count before we decide what we will be doing and go from there.

Most holidays were interupted at least once by a call if not more. Calls might last a few minutes or could be a few hours. I am glad those days are gone. ------ Ada

We do get paid more on holidays, but often, I miss the holiday because I'm sleeping before working nights, then the holiday pay doesn't apply to the night. I would really support stores being closed or having very limited hours on holidays. HUG ------ 🌸 Plenty of machines, mostly Berninas 🌸

If I got a holiday off, it was only because his birthday fell on it. I think because I was so used to working on the holidays they don't mean a whole lot to me.

If anyone got it off, that was usually was determined on what day of the week the day fell on. Often we had to work and it was busy busy busy to boot. My mother did this too, so all my life we had non-traditional traditions. There are many ways to spend holidays and we've done many different things, particularly Thanksgiving.
