Date: 5/29/12 1:43 AM I looked up fabric stores in Asheville and there are a couple independent stores. I so hope at least one of them is wonderful?
Anybody know anything about them?
The trip will take me from IA to Indinapolis, thru Louisville then Knoxville. Any fabric stores I should stop at along the way? ------ Ada

Date: 5/29/12 7:46 AM Didn't search fabric there, but be sure and go in the funky 60's stores downtown for vintage clothing and antiques. Drive part of the non-commercial Blueridge Pkwy. for gorgeous views. Ask the locals for great quiet hikes among trout streams. And search out a festival with the authentic mountain music, fiddling, clogging. |

Date: 5/29/12 8:06 AM I've not been there in years, but Waechter's, in downtown Asheville, used to be a wonderful place for upscale fabrics.

Enjoy Asheville -- it is a nice place.
edited to add: If you are traveling I-40 from Knoxville to Asheville, be sure to check road conditions. That stretch is road has had rockslide problems, causing significant detours at times. -- Edited on 5/29/12 8:09 AM -- ------ Karen

Date: 5/29/12 10:34 AM Waechter's and the other indy (I forget the name) were very nice when I visited there, twelve years ago. I haven't been to Ashevlle since, though. I remember that Waechter's (at that time) had an awesome button inventory, and not the usual stuff we find at the chain stores. |

Date: 5/29/12 4:56 PM Hands down, you must visit Waechter's. It is a little pricey...last time down I spent over $300 dollars. Enjoy! |

Date: 5/29/12 8:29 PM Waechter's is wonderful--I was there three years ago
and was still as great as ever. Look at their website and
you will be impressed I think. Great quality fabrics and
therefore more expensive. Enjoy Asheville.

You may find several stores as well as other places to explore.. We use to live up in that area.. and would drive here and there.. You are going to have a fabulous trip exploring those places.. Enjoy it. and let us know what you see.
Unfortunately its been too long since I visited that area to remember the fabric stores.. On top of which there use to be many more than there is now.. what with so much moving to China.. but you will still find plenty of places to shop and have fun..
Nice people in that area too. Have a great time. |

Date: 5/29/12 11:29 PM Waecthers has very nice fabric. A few months ago I bought all my fabric for MOG dress there. It's high quality stuff. Lots of beautiful silks, but other things, too, including the buttons. Very nice and helpful staff. Enjoy your visit. It's a beautiful place.

Date: 5/30/12 1:21 AM This isn't in AsheVille, but not too terribly far away: Tennesee Quilts in Jonesborough Tenn. It's a lovely area and a wonderful shop with an unbelievable selection. Just in case you like cruising different quilt shops, and really who doesn't ! Bert |

Date: 5/30/12 4:54 PM I always stop by Waechter's when I'm in Asheville (about once a year); it's in biltmore village now. House of Fabrics, on Merrimon, is also a great place to stop by. They've got a much smaller space & inventory, but the staff has always been super friendly and helpful and they often have ends of designer cuts (donna karan, anna sui, that sort of thing). Also, if you're veggie (or not afraid of it) you simply must stop by Rosetta's: the tempeh reuben with sweet potato fries makes regular appearances in my dreams! I love that place. ------ "You have a better life if you wear impressive clothes." -Vivienne Westwood |
