I'm going to applique a tshirt to match a pair of shorts I made for my son. I've never done this on any kind of knit before - I've only ever used my embroidery machine on quilting cotton. Any tips? Do I still use an embroidery needle? Or a stretch needle? What type of interfacing do you recommend? Oh, and what is that stuff you would use so that the inside doens't irritate the skin? I've seen it on RTW on the inside of embroidered tshirts before.

I haven't used my embroidery machine in two years, so hopefully it doens't need a tuneup! It's got a 5x7 hoop, and I just know that if I head back into the store, I'll end up with a new machine. And I don't use it very often to begin with... sigh... if you can please talk me down from that!

A good resource can be found at this site. A number of PR members refer to the tutorials and charts they have.

Click here for Embroidery Library's Techniques Tips.

Use a machine embroidery needle for knit. Not a sewing machine needle.

Cut away stabilizer.

Iron-on tricot for the backing can be found at the fabric store with interfacing.

Practice doing an applique on an old t-shirt
