My 1949 singer has been bird threading and the bobbin tension must be terribly wrong because after I pull the bobbin thread through the needle making the loop, the bobbin is tight as a drum skin! egads I've turned the little screw to the left and the thread is still super tight, what am I doing wrong? thnx.

Are you turning it left from the correct orientation? On mine, you hold the bobbin casing with opening facing DOWN, then turn the little screw left.

Or, maybe the thread is caught somewhere below?

I assume more advanced sewists will answer too. Good luck though; I'm forever trying to adjust it to perfection, and then I go and use a different fabric, and have to start all over, LOL!

When you get loopy stitches on the underside, it is usually the upper threading. The first thing to always try is to rethread the machine. Messing with the bobbin tension is rarely necessary. Also, try a new needle.
