Date: 6/2/12 10:21 AM Hey there,
I am a newbie here. I have taken a look around the boards and could spend all day here! I'm having so much fun!
I am expecting our second child and am wanting to make cloth diapers for the baby. What fabric will I need and how much? Where can I go to learn and make them? I am also planning to buy a serger within the next month or two. I'm pretty sure my Janome 509 won't do all the thick fabric. Will the diapers need a coverstitch? I'm wanting to but a good quality machine without spending $1,000 right now. Any thoughts? Thanks for thaking the time to read this and hope I am posting this in the correct place.

As i recall the diaper was dble layer with multiple layers thru the middle third, the catch-all area! If you can sew two layers of denim on you machine, you should be fine with diapers. And you can use a zigzag instead of a serger to finish edges. Have fun! ------ Coco |

Date: 6/3/12 2:07 PM Welcome! I have not made diapers but my Brother 1034 serger will do whatever my sewing machine can do and more. I bought it online for around $200 last year. Sergers are powerhouses! I am not familiar with the Janome 509 so can't speak as to its ability. Somewhere on here was a discussion about diapers. They looked pretty easy to make. There is a whole thread devoted to the Brother. Dealers in your area may have some options as well in your price range if you feel like you want the support. And feel free to ask questions! People here are always willing to help! |

I used just a sewing machine for the diaper cover as you don't have any raw edges that show. This comprised of the waterproof fabric on the outer layer and micro fleece on the lining side. I made Bamboo inserts to slide in through a pocket from the back and in between the legs to the front. The bamboo was two layers and serged together. I bought a heavy duty snap tool from a place called Snaps Australia online and they were placed in such a way that the diaper fitted all ages. Snaps Australia are also worth a look as they sell the diaper fabrics too.

I actually took a diaper apart. We had one which was perfect so I just copied it exactly. ------ Brother QC1000, Brother PQ1500, Bernina Virtuosa 160, Pfaff (old), Babylock BLCS, Bernette 1100D, Bernette 334DS |
