I placed a small order the other day, and it was shipped and all...but 2 days later they give me the refund for items I asked to be notified of if they were sold out (sometimes I need a certain fabric, and I might not want the rest if it doesn't come which I do leave in the customer comment box).

Is it pretty common to mark down that you want to be notified if something is sold out NOT to be notified? In several years, I never have gotten a notification, just the paypal refund.

I know a lot of you receive great customer service, so I was just wondering.

I have always received an email and/or a phone call if my order couldn't be completely filled. It's happened about 3 times I think.

About 75% of the time they do notify me if something is out of stock (sometimes email, sometimes a phone call). There were a few times I was not notified even though I know I had the box checked. I've started to put a note in the comments box "please do not ship if XYZ fabric is out of stock" but since everything I've ordered since then has been in stock I have no idea if it helps or not.

I've received notification about sold out items via email a couple of times and I know I've had one phone call. I think this is a relatively new feature they added, like in the past year or so?

I've gotten a couple emails after the order was shipped about a year ago. Now, I just don't get anything at all from them.

I also have had most of my orders being partial this year. There has been one that had everything I ordered in it, where at least one fabric was out of stock. Granted, I shop sales pretty much exclusively, but it seems like I'm getting more miss here recently then hit all the way around.

I should have added that I think January this year was my last order from them. Not that I'm done with them; I'm just well-stocked already & have been on a bit of a sewing hiatus until recently.

Ive never asked to be notified about out of stock items since I am usually just adding to my stash when I shop online at Fabric Mart. There have been a few times that an item I ordered was out of stock, and I recieved an email evey time telling me about it.

I think it really depends on how popular a fabric is, and if you are purchasing during a sale. If there is something they have that I really want I order it right away so I am not disappointed. When I have been notified in the past, I think it is when they have all the pieces cut and they are emailing or calling as a courtesy right before they ship. I now also indicate that I do not want the order filled unless fabric XYZ is available. Usually I order too much at once, and I can make do without what ever fabric I think I can't live without!

Funny, I'm upset with them over sending my expensive order with high end fabric effing Smartpost.

I think it's just time for me to buy less from higher end stores.

I still order from them, but that has happened to me several times. Unlike fabric.com or gorgeousfabrics.com, which DO let you know up front if something-- even one thing-- is out or backordered and ask what you prefer, the SOP at Fabric Mart seems to be to process your order without those items, send the rest, and refund. Each time it happened to me, I actually received my order before the refund processed, so I got the orders with an invoice with several fabrics crossed out, noted out of stock, and a new total at the bottom. A few days later, I'd see the refunded difference. I still order from them, but only if the special is super-fine, or they have some specialty fabric I can't get anywhere else.
