A Win For Parents Everywhere All of that mothering seems to have paid off.

Date: 6/7/12 0:29 AM Something happened to DD which she was happy to tell me and I am happy to tell you. She is in a show which opens on Friday. Yesterday she showed up for rehearsal and the folks in charge of costumes were going nuts with something - they were gluing bits of things to other things, and trying to glue crystals in a straight line, and someone said to DD, "Hey, how crafty are you?" DD said, "Not very much, but I can sew." The costumer was OVERJOYED. It seems that all of these people were glad to glue but everyone was scared of sewing. DD said she couldn't believe it. (I post here so of course I found it believable in spades.) DD took the sewing home and did it today, by hand, in about two hours. She said to me, "Remember when you used to make me learn to sew and I didn't want to do it, and I didn't like it? (I swear she is my born child.) Well, it is a good thing you did. I knew just what to do and I made a good job of it. So, thank you for teaching me." I only had to wait 20 years to hear it, but that's ok! ------ Barb

You done good Ma. ------ My hope is to sew to the very end. They'll find my head slumped over my precious Kenmore 19606 and have to pry the seam ripper from my cold, dead hands.

Date: 6/7/12 6:30 AM When my DD was hired for her first job, she later told me her boss told her one of the main reasons she was the one chosen for the job was that after the interview, she was the only applicant to write a THANK YOU NOTE!! A skill I insisted she learn and I remember her grumbling and resisting about writing this "waste of time" (her words) note!! That sure made my day!!

You must have been delighted with both her and yourself My mother is in awe of my ability to "just do crafty things", but I think that she forgets how she taught me to sew when I was just a small child, and she made clothes for me and my sisters. It takes her longer and she finds it less enjoyable than I do, but that doesn't mean she did any less of a good job in passing the skills on to me. I must remind her of that more often.

Date: 6/7/12 7:55 AM Way to go Barb.. and the fact our kids are still even talking to us says we didn't do so bad a job at raising them after all. My DD can sew.. if she has too.. I have paraded a Natalie and a blue mini brand new in front of my soon to be DIL , but no bites yet. I write as I look at the stack of blue jeans on my desk waiting repair for those two. To me sewing is a skill as basic to survival as cooking or fixing simple things on a car. Which is of course why we marry.. as us gals don't like changing our own oil. All kids should at least be taught how to stitch on a button and repair seams.. Kudos for the schools that now allow guys to take home ed.. And many kudos to those moms like you that teach their children the love of sewing ..

Date: 6/7/12 5:28 PM Its a wonderful thing when a child thanks you years later for something you did or taught them etc in the past. The kind of things that at the time they either totally took for granted, or saw as a pain in the rear. Best one I ever got was the day my daughter thanked me for paying for her college education...several years after she had graduated. She is now a 1st grade teacher. I guess one day a bunch of her co-workers were in the teachers lounge complaining and compairing notes about the student loans they were all still paying off. My daughter quickly realized how lucky she was to be the only one of the bunch that didnt have those bills hanging over her head. Was really nice to be given credit for what we did and to know that she truly appreciated it :)
