Hi everyone!

I love knits. There are an increasing number of patterns that call for knits. Tops. Dresses. Trouble is...I can't find good knits in the store! When I lived on the east coast, I was able to go to Joann's, and they had some lovely soft knits that washed really well. Now that I'm in the Midwest for grad school, I have to go to Hancock, and they have an AWFUL selection of knits.

I have never bought fabric online, because it scares me to not be able to touch it before I commit.

Any suggestions about good, soft knits either online or somewhere else in the St. Louis area? Also, what is up with Hancock having such a poor selection of knits!?

Cristina

I like FabricMart for ladies knits, but there are other places more consistently nicer but much more pricey. FabricMart suits my budget. I like the Julie's Picks swatch mailer so I can feel before I buy.

I also like Girl Charlee. I buy more knits for my kids than myself there, but they do have some nice ladies prints too.

Fabric.com is even more variable on quality, but I have some wonderful cotton lycra from there from last year that I love.

I agree with the previous mail order recommendations. And as I learned last year after a very"meh" order of fabric.com knits, they take them back for full credit.

I love knits, too! Fabric.com, fashionfabricsclub.com, High End Fabrics on ebay are some of my favorites.

Also, Girl Charlee, and Sawyer Brook, too!

I love knits, too. My favorite thing to do is take a woven pattern and adjust it for knits. No zippers, no button holes, maximum comfort. I even have knits that look like woven suiting or denim. No one has ever noticed the difference.

For basic (color and style) knits I like Silhouette Patterns. They're a pattern company but Peggy who runs the company tests all her fabrics before she sells them. That means in most cases putting it in the washer, sewing with them and wearing the garments.

Linda at emmaonesock has wonderful, wonderful knits. Her images and descriptions of the fabrics are, for me, dead reliable, and she responds swiftly to email questions. It's worth noting that although the shipping appears high when you enter your order, that's just the computer program. In fact, it is generally adjusted downwards (though there is no such thing as cheap shipping nowadays).

marcytilton.com is very good, too, and her right-hand man Shelley is very helpful for questions. But the shipping is what it is there.

I have bought several very nice knits from this ebay seller, also.

I get all my knits from EOS. She has a money-back guarantee but I've never had to return anything.

I've purchased some knits from Georgous fabrics. They seem to be good quality at a reasonable price.

In St. Louis, try Sew it Seams in Kirkwood and Jackman Fabrics in Creve Couer. Jackmans has two stores but I am not sure where the other is.

Sew It Seams specializes in garment fabrics and I have picked up some nice knits there. Jackmans doesn't have as many knits but their discount table is worth a look.

Good luck in your quest!
