Date: 6/8/12 4:11 PM I'm making a shirt, and have only got the button holes to finish. Wonderful, you may think. Indeed it has been so far. Alas, my least favourite job can no longer be delayed. The button holes await.
For someone who rather dislikes button holes (I have this fear of messing them up) you will no doubt shake your head in disbelief that I chose a pattern with 11 (!) buttonholes.
My defense would be I had no idea there were that many, until it was too late and I had already started sewing. I fell in love with some beautiful blue buttons.
Unfortunately, there were only 10 left at the shop. I naturally bought the lot thinking, oh that will be plenty. Only once arriving back home did I discover it was not. Something has to give, and I think it should be the collar button. I have never been a fan of a tight collar (makes me think of school!) and see this as the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.
What say you? am I flirting on the edge of disaster, or being ruthlessly practical and efficient? |

Date: 6/8/12 4:44 PM Sometimes those top buttons can be so annoying, by all means leave it off. You may want to reassess where you put your actual top button and top buttonhole. The placement of some of the 'second' buttons is sometimes great and sometimes not.
If you lose a button and only have nine :eek:, I could even suggest that the bottom button be replaced with a hidden snap or a small button carefully stitched to the inside where you would normally place a buttonhole so the stitches do not show and then put the buttonhole where you would normally place the button.
Super looking blouse and the color is beautiful.
Leafing through a Travel & Leisure magazine, I noticed a patterned skirt that, although not as pretty or unique as your circle skirt, had the same feel. It was included in a short pictorial showing top trends as worn by real folks. It was worn by a very sharp looking fashion consultant in New Zealand. ------

4 members like this. I never even use their buttonhole placement. I like a button to be over the apex of my bust line so that I don't have button gaposis. Then I put the other buttons above and below evenly from there. You get to decide where you want buttons since you're the designer. ------

1 member likes this. I leave off this button all the time on my own shirts. I never use it, it's hard to sew plus I prefer the look without it, so go for it and be free. ------

I'm too cheap to spend another $3.00 on a card of two buttons just for that one stinking button that I need, only to have an extra toting its way around my button box. So I don't use a button at the neckline either! ------

Date: 6/10/12 2:49 PM ok, you've all convinced me. I am now proceeding guilt free straight to a button free collar. Alas, the sewing of the button holes has encountered a hiccup, the dreaded placement dilemma.
According to the carefully stitched tailor tacks, they will end up right of centre (i.e. nearer the edge of the button band). This doesn't look like my retail wear.
My tutor has just been sent a "help me please" email, as there is NO way I am carefully adding 8 buttonholes to be told I need tip rip them out.
I've already done that to 4, after discovering I had added them to the wrong side. Sigh. Note to self. Remember when in future you get up on a Sunday to READ the instructions carefully and not rely on your woolly memory.

Date: 6/10/12 6:28 PM It is probably to late for my two cents but....
In the olden days when I sewed garments for me, I always had to redo where the buttons would go and decide how many I needed to use. Two reasons. One, I am short so I am usually shortening a top by a good inch at least so the buttons and button holes would be re-assigned because of that.
The other is that I am very busty so at least one button is going to be strategically located to alleviate any potential "boob gap". Then I would have to figure out where to place the rest of the buttons.
So YES.... you can definitely be the master of your own button placement. |
