I am looking for a sewing embroidery combo machine and don't want to go over $1000. I am a bit overwhelmed at the amount of info I am reading.
I have a Brother SE-350 and have had nothing but problems with it. 3 times to the repair shop in a year. Yet when I read Brother reviews, they seem very positive.
I would love bigger than a 4x4 hoop, and some classes from the dealer.
Please tell me the machine you have, and love, and why. Also the cost. Thank you so much!

Well... for under $1000, I think you may be hard pressed to find a machine that has a 5x7 hoop size.

I bought my machine a few months ago and I ended up with a Brother Innovis 1250D. It was about $1399 and it has a 5x7 hoop. Originally I was looking at the smaller machines, like the Brother 950D or the Babylock Sophia 2 which I believe are JUST under the $1000 price. Unfortunately, for me, they were on the smaller side (actual machine size were kinda small) and the largest hoops they went was 4x4. I originally THOUGHT this would be ok, but after thinking about it for awhile, I decided that I wanted a little bigger of a machine and I figured for just a few hundred dollars more I could get the bigger hoop size as well.

Anyways... that's my two cents. Both the Brother 950D and the BL Sophia 2 are very good machines and are combo machines, so if you decide to get those, I think you'll have a good machine either way.

HTH!

I second Heather's suggestion. I would save up a bit longer and go for the Brother. I had the earlier version of the 1250 and it was a nice sewing machine and embroidery machine.

Just bought a Sofia as a gift for a niece. The 4x4 is big enough for her... it was on sale... $500. So I assume the next size Babylock, the Ellure will probably be on sale too. Ellure has 5x7.

I think I would consider 2 different machines... One embroidery only and one for sewing. Maybe a brother pe770 for embroidery and then a pc420 sewing machine? Although you wouldn't get the dealer classes since I think they're both online machines.

Oh, forgot to mention that the Babylock equal for the Brother 1250D is the Ellure Plus. It's also a combo machine and basically exactly the same as the Brother but the Brother has the Disney embroidery licensing. The Babylocks tend to cost a little more than the Brother's as well, but they are basically the same machine.

I am interested infollowing the feedback you get from this. I am intereste in a replacement in my embroidery unit. Currently I have a machine that both sews and does embroidery, but want only an embroidery machine. Does anyone know of a nice machine that only does embroidery, offers large hoops, but is not a professional model?

Started machine embroidery on a whim when I saw the Brother PE 150 at Walmart several years ago.

I taught myself to machine embroidery - no lessons - just used books as very little was on the web (blogs or sites for machine embroidery).

A few years later I decided to upgrade and came home with the baby lock Ellegante, which is a combo with a larger hoop. I was only interested in a machine with the larger stitch-out area, but this was the end of nproduction for this particular model and it was not only discounted, but came with Designer's Gallery editing and catalog software. My husband thought it was a good buy and it came home with us.

It has been the greatest machine I have ever purchased and my sewing history includes 2 Berninas, 1 Singer Golden Touch 'n Sew and Elna 7200. Still using the Elna, sold the Berninas and the Brother, gave the Singer to Goodwill.

Bottom line - first test the dealer. If you are uncomfortable, go to another shop.

Visit Sewing Expos.

Take notes on your personal experience.

My personal experience tells me to stick with Brother or baby lock.

Brother just came out with the new DreamMakerô XE Innov-is VE2200 embroidery only machine with a large harp. It will have a 7"x12" field for embroidery.
Brother also has the PE-780D and PE-770, with a possible 5"x12" area(you have to split the design first but their is a large hoop available.)
