Hello! I looked under notion reviews in the categorie "Dress Forms, Hangers", but did not see any dress form reviews. Any suggestions to where I can find them?

I am in the market to buy my first dress form and consider the opinions of fellow sewers to be the most important input out there.

I have also seen a set of pads just for dress forms to really personalize all the curves (Dress Form System by Fabulous Fit), and I think whatever dress form I buy I will need them, so any input on those would be good too. I found them on Amazon. Thanks!

I haven't purchased the fabulous fit system (yet!), but it's on my list. Jill Ralston spoke during the PR Weekend NYC. She used the system to make the dress form a duplicate of one lady and I was impressed!

If you type "dress forms" in the search for the "boards" you will see a whole list of topics / try this link

Nblyleven: There is an article in the newest "Threads Magazine" by Kenneth King on dress forms and how to fit them to yourself and other people, it is so interesting. You might want to read it before you order your form. I have a dressform from the 1970's when I was in high school. I ordered the Fabulous Fit system to pad it out, have yet to do it, but is on my list for this summer. Unfortunately, I am not the same size as I was in the 70's.

edited to add: Silhouette Patterns - Peggy Sager has a webinar on dress forms, you may also want to watch that.

I'm not sure how you missed them if you filtered by category in the Sewing Supplies reviews. There are at least 60 reviews if you choose Dress Forms, hangers as a category filter. I typed Dress in the search box for the main Sewing Supplies reviews page and got 66 reviews. Maybe there was a glitch at the server or browser problem?

Certainly read through the reviews before you purchase anything!

Last fall I went on the PGM website and bought their least expensive form ($159, including free shipping) in their smallest size (Size 2), which unfortunately is no longer available. Unfortunately, it seems PGM's Size 2 forms are now only available in the more expensive models($399). The less expensive forms are however available in Size 4 through 10.

When thinking about a form, it's important to consider the type of sewing you do because it will suggest the type of form you need. For example, collapsable shoulders would be important if you sew fitted tops. But my sewing is limited to knit tops and jackets, neither of which require a form with collapsable shoulders so that feature is not important to me.

Women who sew skirts and dresses might prefer a form that comes with a full length hip and a metal cage. But since I sew pants I went with a form that has a shorter hip, and I eventually removed the cage, and this allows me to dress the form in pants for "fashion photoshoots." I also could have gone with a "bridal form" whose bottom half is shaped like a pair of bicycle shorts.

If you're looking for a PGM type form, it's essential that the form's measurements be smaller than your's in every direction (vertical, horizontal, etc.). Remember, you can always pad out, but you cannot make this type of form smaller.

I also bought the Fabulous Fit system of pads and body suits in the smallest size, (Size Small). However, it seems the pads are one size and the only item that is sized is the body suit. I did use the two body suits in the kit, but the pads were much too large for me, and I ended up using batting to pad out my form. I also dressed the form in a good molded bra and that, along with a little padding, helped to approximate my bustline. This is what my form looked like after I padded it out but before I removed the metal cage.

To pad, I used my eyes and a full length mirror, as well as a tape measure. I spent a few hours on this project the first day. But I went back to my form every day for several days and kept making adjustments until I was satisfied.
