I want to make myself some running shorts. Not compression shorts, but the "retro" looking ones with liners that marathoners wear. I've been running in the same pair I bought pre-kids from MEC. It's totally time for a new pair (or several pairs), but I can't find them for less than $50 each. Seems pretty steep for something I could probably make from less than a 1/2 yard of fabric.

What kind of fabric are the outer parts made of? I know it's definitely some kind of poly or poly/nylon lightweight woven and is really lightweight.

Also, anyone know where I can get the padding that goes in bike shorts? I have the same issue with bike shorts, except new ones are even more expensive than run shorts.

the light woven nylon is supplex nylon (don't get it mixed up with supplex lycra knit)
another fabric they use for retro shorts and NBA uniforms is called dazzle

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
