About a week ago, I was looking for some buttons to go with my damask tablecloth (sans stains) blouse I made. The only site I could find was Nancy's Notions, where I've purchased many times before. In the past, the customer service people were so helpful in finding my seam tracer, as well as the surgical seam ripper that I eventually bought 15 of and gave away to my quilting students. Most of my purchases were large.

But today I'm having a hissy fit. These buttons, on a total of six cards, weighed 0.17 pounds, or 2.72 ounces. I paid a "Freight Charge" of $5.45, which made them about $2.00 an ounce! Realistically I could have had these sent, not through SmartPost, like they were, but First Class from the post office and would have had to pay just $1.95. Priority Mail cost $5.35 for a flat rate envelope and I wouldn't have had to wait a week for the buttons; just two days and I could now be wearing the blouse. So what is going on here? What is the price gouging practices of SmartPost, when it's a USPS affiliate? Why is their "gas" more expensive and the post offices?

So in continuing to honor my hissy fit, I sent Nancy's an email, explaining my unhappiness. I don't suppose I'll receive an answer, other than the canned "We're sorry but gas prices are high nowadays". This is much like the response I received when I emailed them about a problem in Nancy's Column Quilting book and how several friends and I were frustrated with the quilt (the photo was wrong; showed five columns instead of four..). For that I received "Thank you for telling us".

Am I being too hard?

You know I just made a small order to nancy and was pretty amazed at how expensive the freight was. Does it get any cheaper if you order more? I know there are some fabric on-line sources I don't make an order unles I am buying several items or yards, the freight is just not worth it. I only ordered one thing from Nancy and am not sure if freight would have been the same had I ordered a little more. I paid 10 dollars freight for something I am sure weighed less than a pound.

I order when she has good sales. Which was a button hole cutting kit and a pocket template and some tweezers, and I believe I got free shipping.

Nope, not too hard, imo.

This is why I like etsy and ebay--the shipping is SO much more reasonable than catalogues--and you get your orders in a fraction of the time. Catalogues really gouge you on the "handling," IMO. I've never heard of Smart Post, but I do know the few times I've ordered from Nancy's the shipping has been pretty high.

(This is also why I like Amazon; $25 gets you free shipping on pretty much everything.)

Oooh, thanks Threaddy! I'm about due for an order to NN.

The shipping rates are not exactly a secret and aren't especially out of line:
Nancy's Notions Shipping info

A $2 purchase still has to be pulled, packed, boxed, labeled, and electronically tracked, the same as any other purchase. I accept that there's a certain amount of overhead. I'm lucky enough to have multiple fabric and sewing stores in my area (Silicon Valley), and I know where they all are, but driving from store to store to store looking for just the right notion (easily 30 or 50 miles total trip) isn't free either.

When I order from NN, I "save up" a list and order as many items as I can, and I stock up on stuff that I usually get from NN, for example, Pattern Tracing Paper (medical exam table paper). I always tack a couple of rolls onto an order so I always have it on hand. (I keep giving it away to various friends whom I am attempting to infect with my sewing obsession.)

How much would a round trip to the store cost vs shipping?

This is what I consider before buying online.

Even so, for me, shipping is cheaper then driving but I live in the county.

I have to view the cost of the item, plus the shipping, etc. to determine if I really need it.

I think Smart Post is the partnership of the PO and FedEx. I also hate it, it takes forever and costs more than priority.

I understand what has to happen to get the order in the mail. But a brick & mortar store has to have clerks, cash registers & cashiers, parking lot, carts, bathrooms, etc. They don't charge extra for those. I understand charging for shipping. I don't understand why a shipping charge would be so much higher than actual shipping costs.
