I'm on the hunt for a pattern for a baby dress coat that could be worn to a formal wedding. The wedding will be taking place in late October and a portion of the celebration will be outside. My daughter will only be present in the afternoon, when temperatures will probably just be cool (not super-cold), so the coat doesn't have to be as heavy as a winter-coat.

My daughter will be one week shy of a year old at the time of the wedding. Most of the woven fabric dress coats I've found are sized for an older toddler and not a baby. I did find this Burda pattern, but I'd love to know if anyone here has seen any other suitable patterns (vintage is okay, too). Thanks in advance!

I like KwikSew 2468, which comes in a size 1. It's very easy to make up and can be more or less dressy depending on the fabric. It's out-of-print but a quick search found a copy on Ebay (e.g. here) and also other internet sites. In looking I noticed also that there are a variety of suitable patterns on Etsy.

Otherwise, how about a long-sleeved dress out of a heavy fabric?

Ooh...thank you SO MUCH for the Etsy link! After a preliminary browse, I've already bookmarked several patterns that are pretty much exactly what I was looking for - and in size 1, which I've had trouble finding before now. Now my big problem is which one to choose! haha.

I did initially think about making a long-sleeved dress, but the civil ceremony portion of the wedding will be inside the mayor's office and I'm worried, with everyone packed into the room, a heavy fabric might get uncomfortable for her. I, myself, got married in the same building a few years back and remember it being quite warm, though nerves might have had something to do with it! I think a separate coat will make it easier to transition comfortably from the indoor ceremony to the outdoor festivities.

Anyway, thanks again for setting me in the right direction!

Just an update to say that I ended up purchasing this vintage Simplicity pattern from Etsy.

The pattern is complete and uncut, and includes a party dress, tulip hat, and dress coat. This will be my first time sewing a vintage pattern and I'm really excited about it! I'll be sure to put up a review once I have everything made up.

Love the pattern, my mother made me a coat when I was younger. I believe it was the same pattern as this, she made the collar detachable. I felt so sophisticated in it :).

I haven't gone fabric shopping yet, but for the coat, I'm thinking maybe boucle. I'll be making the tulip hat from the pattern, as well (it's just too cute to resist!), in the same fabric as the coat.

I love the look of the blue checked dress under the blue coat, as seen in the pattern illustration, so now I'm on a mission to find blue gingham taffeta for her little party dress.
