This is the first time I've used a Jalie pattern but I've made other swimsuits before. I can't wrap my head around how to attach the neck tie (view A) - one picture makes it look like it functions as binding around the back of the suit and then becomes the ties in front, but the directions confuse me b/c they say to attach it first, then sew the open section and then turn rightside out. I checked the reviews and don't see anyone else having had this problem so it must be me! Thanks!

So sorry no one has answered you yet. Have you worked this out?

I made this for my daughter. Looking at the instructions, as I recall making this (it's been a while), you're right about part becoming the binding. You sew part to the suit top and leave part unattached. You then only sew the unattached part together (to itself) to make the tube (which you turn right side out). The rest (already attached to the suit) folds over and becomes the binding.

HTH and I haven't confused you more (or just gotten it wrong - like I said, it's been a while).

ETA - I just checked my review and look what I said ...

Quote:
Were the instructions easy to follow? Hmmm... for me, not so much this time. Normally, I "get" Jalie instructions but this time I did not. If MelissaB in WA hadn't helped me out, I'd still be tearing my hair out. The part that was confusing to me was the top strap. This strap runs all the way around the top edge of the back, up the side of the bra top and then become straps. What you do is sew one strap edge (RS strap to WS back/sides of tankini top) around the body, stopping at the top of the bra. Then, you fold the strap so it is right sides together and sew them together (like you'd do any strap) the part that will eventually tie around your neck (from the bra on up). THEN you turn that part through itself. THEN you double fold in to the front of the tankini the hanging-in-the-breeze strap part that has already had one edge sewn to the back/sides. THEN you topstitch that down.

Another part confused me too. The bra-top pattern has little triangles that hang down from one corner. I could not figure this out since when I serged the bra-top to the body of the tankini, those got whacked off with the serger. I think I assembled the bra-top part correctly but perhaps I didn't. Maybe the next reviewer of this pattern can tell me what I missed!

You are not alone in being confused!!! Take heart, I got it right and even made it again

Thanks - I was finally able to figure it out yesterday. I see now what confused me was 1)sewing the RS of the strap to the WS of the suit - usually when I put binding on a neckline I do it RS to RS and then flip to the inside.

2)it refers to notches on the strap lining up with notches on the back. The only notches on the strap actually line up with the front of the top - I double-checked the pattern paper to be sure I hadn't missed copying in another notch but there is only the one set, and they are much too far from the center back, in any size, to line up with the top's notches.

I did get it sewn, though, and the top looks good. However, the bottoms are ridiculously small. I am making the full-cut, high waisted ones. If I'd gone by her hip size (25") I would have had to choose a size 5. I made the size 10, which says hips 29-1/2" (b/c her waist is 24 and I needed that size for it, even though it says go by hip size). She could not even get them on. I went back and traced 2 sizes larger and they are still barely large enough. And the "high waist" is still 1.5 inches below her navel.

I'm going back to KS - the only reason I didn't for this is b/c she'd outgrown all my patterns and I'd bought the Jalie last year. I didn't have any local place to buy KS (JoAnn's only carries a few KS patterns now, not the whole line) but I did happen to go near a Hancocks last week and picked up the KS I need.

Thanks for your help - I must have missed your review b/c I thought I'd read them all, looking for the problem.

I made this I think two years ago and understood how they wanted the straps done, but I was laying in the whole binding using the coverstitch so ignored the instructions. I didn't write a review but had commented on it in a bathing suit sewalong on PR at the time.

I agree that the bottoms run smaller than the top.
