Inspiration for hand quilting?

I'm making a very basic quilt which is scrappy squares with a strong 1970 vibe.

Once it's all sewn together I'd like to try hand quilting for the first time and have been looking for inspiration for designs and hints and tips.

However, I can't find much, my books all focus on the piecing rather than the actual quilting and none of them talk about hand quilting as I've previously mainly been interested in piecing the blocks. A google search hasn't found much either, again, it's mostly yielded piecing and quilt top designs.

So, can anyone recommend a good book or source for hand quilting designs?

That's the beauty of hand quilting- you can use whatever you want! It doesn't have to have anything at all to do with quilting.

I have used regular wall stencils. I made my own "MJ" initial template for my grandson. On my current quilt, I wanted something to represent my daughter's sorority, so I printed out pictures of their mascot( Betxi Bear) and flower(rose), and used that.

Use whatever picture, pattern, design you like!

I wholly agree with CatnBull! I have a couple of books that lend themselves to hand quilting.

While this book may not focus on hand quilting, you can hand-quilt any machine-quilting design. Try:

Quilting makes the quilt

If you live in a town with a local library, they might have some books on quilting. The older books can have great ideas and designs. The newer ones focus more on machine quilting, and those can be adapted to hand designs easily. However, since you are new to hand quilting, the older books might be your better guide.

Thanks all, lots of inspiration there. Have had a good browse and have ordered some books.

I may well end up compromising (being a bit more realistic about my abilities) and mix machine quilting large areas with some hand quilting of motifs on the plain fabric squares.

Just had an idea for another quilt though! (I do have a bad habit of planning at least two projects ahead)

Anyway, one of the things that daunts me about hand quilting is all the marking I would need to do. But today I came across a lovely fabric in a two tone lattice print and I wondered if there is any reason why the fabric itself shouldn't form the quilting design? I would probably use this fabric for the centre , so have it 140 cm square and hand quilt that along the lines of the pattern. Then I'd add on borders to make it big enough to use.

Will have to hurry to finish this one now as I'm really excited about that idea.

My current project has a combo of hand and machine quilting.

And I also used the fabric design for hand quilting on a previous quilt. I sewed around circles and stars, and quilted the lines in a checkerboard section.

Here is one checkerboard section, with MJ's quilted in also. You can see the circles too.
