A few days ago I had to go to me local dealer to buy some supplies and decided to look over a few machines. I need to upgrade my Janome Memory Craft 3000 purchased in 2003. It's time. It has been a real workhorse, but lately it's not up to its usual sewing perfection even with a tuneup. It still has taken to occasional "screeching", something the tuneup didn't correct. It doesn't affect the stitching at all, but I believe it's telling me to trade it in because it's tired lol.

One that I looked at was a Janome for about $899. The other was the Elna (Janome made) 740 Excellence. I guess the Janome Horizon is the almost the same as the 740 Excellence, but all the salespeople at the dealership prefer the Elna for various reasons. My dealer is reputable and the sales staff is very knowledgeable so I do trust their judgement.

Today I sat down to test drive the Elna 740 and decided to put it on layaway. It is on sale for $1,999, but the owner sold it to me for $1600. I wasn't expecting much for my trade-in because the machine was already on sale, however, the owner said he gave me a very good price because I'm always in there giving them business. Very true! I certainly don't mind him chopping an extra $400 off the sale price for my trade-in.

I've read some reviews, done Google searching on it, and am very satisfied with my purchase. The price was right, and I think it's going to be an asset with my formal dress alterations if it progresses into a viable and sustainable business. $1600 seemed like a very fair price. My new baby should be home by Christmas!

Congrats! That's the lowest sale price I've heard of for the 740.

Let us know how you like it. The foot storage looks cool!

Congrats on deciding on a new machine!
Christmas seems a long way off, but I am sure it will go quickly and you'll be sewing on your baby.
I really like elna machines, I bought a basic Elna 2300 for taking to classes and although it was a fairly inexpensive machine it has turned into my favourite one!
I really enjoy sewing on it.

Sounds like you have found a good dealer which is good to have.
Roll on December.

You're kidding, right? You don't get it till nearly Christmas?

I bought that machine just about a year ago when my old Husqvarna 400 died. I meant to do a review but haven't gotten around to it yet. I am happy with it and I LOVE the foot storage bin. It's nice and heavy and doesn't slide around on my table.

For no reason i also like the Elna better than the janome... Maybe the front storage for the feet? ...

I'm thrilled for you ... If these machines had 9mm stitches I would be saving my pennies!

Thanks, everyone! I would have brought it home today except that DD#1 still has half her college stuff at home. In September, 2 of my kids will be off at college so I'll actually have space I can organize. It will be a joy to actually move my coverstitch, Babylock serger, and embroidery machines upstairs to one of our bedrooms. Right now they're in my sewing room in the basement.

My new sewing machine will have a permanent spot on our large kitchen table at one end. Really, our table has been more like a craft table than an eating table. We rarely use it for meals other than holiday gatherings so we are all in and out at different times.

At some point, I'd like to move my kitchen table to our largest bedroom and set up a sewing corner with all three machines, then buy a smaller kitchen table and a dedicated sewing table for the corner of our kitchen for my sewing machine. I really like to be in the thick of things when I sew which is our kitchen.

I really need time to get my kids out and get some of my space back. College will let me do that. Unfortunately our house is somewhat small so there is no room to bring it home right now. The only drawback to my new machine is that I presently move my Janome MC3000 from my kitchen table to sewing cart quite frequently. The Elna 740 is heavier and needs a permanent spot.

At times like this I wish we had a dining room. It would be converted to a sewing room/study area for most of the year.
